Marina Shafir is headed to Arena México for her first appearance under the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre banner, as the AEW wrestler has been announced as the replacement for Shotzi Blackheart in the upcoming Amazonas Grand Prix.

The annual women’s showcase is scheduled for October 23 at Arena México and brings together competitors from CMLL and promotions around the world. This year’s field includes representation connected to AEW, STARDOM, Maple Leaf Pro, MLW and RevPro alongside CMLL’s own roster.

Shafir takes the place of Blackheart, who had been slated to enter the tournament as one of MLW’s representatives alongside Masha Slamovich. Blackheart withdrew following the death of her brother. In addressing her absence, Blackheart described the chance to compete in the Amazonas Grand Prix as a major honor and stressed that she did not take the opportunity lightly.

The change creates a significant moment for Shafir, whose October 23 appearance will mark her CMLL debut. She enters the tournament as a representative of Moldova, adding another international identity to an event built around the global reach of women’s wrestling.

Shafir Brings a Distinct Style to Arena México

CMLL presented Shafir as an imposing AEW presence with a background in mixed martial arts and an aggressive approach in the ring. That description fits the reputation she has established throughout her wrestling career: physical, direct, methodical and well suited to matches where competitors are required to quickly establish their presence.

The Amazonas Grand Prix format makes first impressions especially important. With a broad range of wrestlers from different promotions, countries and stylistic backgrounds gathered in one field, competitors have to adapt on the fly. Shafir’s experience and combat-sports-influenced presentation make her an intriguing addition to a lineup that already features talent associated with lucha libre, Japanese wrestling, European wrestling and North American promotions.

Her inclusion also continues an active relationship between AEW and CMLL. Shafir will join fellow AEW representatives Megan Bayne, Queen Aminata and Harley Cameron in the tournament field. The four wrestlers offer notably different profiles, from Bayne’s power-oriented presence to Aminata’s athleticism and Cameron’s versatility, while Shafir adds a more confrontational submission and striking-based edge.

For Shafir, the event is an opportunity to step into one of professional wrestling’s most historic venues while working in front of a CMLL audience for the first time. Arena México has long served as a central stage for major lucha libre events, and the Grand Prix’s international premise gives debuting performers a particularly visible platform.

Blackheart’s Withdrawal Changes the MLW Representation

Blackheart and Slamovich were previously listed as the two representatives from MLW. Blackheart’s withdrawal is rooted in a deeply personal loss, and the tournament announcement makes clear that her replacement comes under difficult circumstances rather than a competitive storyline change.

While Shafir is arriving from AEW rather than retaining the originally listed MLW pairing, Slamovich remains among the competitors announced for the show. Her presence keeps an MLW-connected wrestler in the field, while CMLL’s decision to bring in Shafir ensures that the international contingent remains packed with recognizable names from across the broader wrestling landscape.

The situation also gives the event a new dynamic. Blackheart’s unorthodox style and personality would have made her a unique entrant in a field like this, but Shafir provides a very different challenge. Instead of replacing like for like, the tournament gains another athlete whose physical intensity can alter the rhythm of exchanges and force opponents to adjust their game plans.

A Deep International Field for the Amazonas Grand Prix

The announced participants underline the scope of the Amazonas Grand Prix. In addition to Shafir, Bayne, Aminata, Cameron, Slamovich and CMLL’s representatives, the field includes Thunder Rosa, Tessa Blanchard, La Jarochita, Alice Crowley, AZM, Skadi, Persephone, Miyu Amasaki, Keyra, Rain, Emersyn Jane, Olympia, India Sioux, Mei Siera, Momo Watanabe and Zeuxis.

That list combines established names with wrestlers who can introduce themselves to a new audience through the tournament setting. It also reflects the event’s larger appeal: the Amazonas Grand Prix is not simply a standard CMLL women’s match, but a showcase designed to put a variety of wrestling cultures and approaches in direct contact.

Thunder Rosa brings strong ties to the Mexican wrestling scene and remains one of the best-known names connected to AEW’s women’s division. Tessa Blanchard arrives as another prominent North American name, while AZM, Miyu Amasaki and Momo Watanabe add major Japanese representation. The lineup’s range creates the possibility of matchups that would be difficult to replicate within a single promotion’s regular schedule.

For CMLL regulars such as La Jarochita, Persephone and Zeuxis, the event provides a home-ring advantage but also the challenge of navigating an unpredictable collection of visiting competitors. The Grand Prix environment traditionally places a premium on awareness, timing and the ability to make a short stretch of ring time meaningful. With so many distinctive styles represented, that challenge should be especially pronounced on October 23.

Another AEW-CMLL Connection at a Major Event

Shafir’s debut is also notable in the context of the wider AEW-CMLL relationship. Other members of AEW’s Death Riders group have already worked in CMLL or appeared on events that connected CMLL with NJPW, AEW or RevPro. Shafir’s arrival means another member of that circle will now add Arena México experience to her résumé.

Her appearance does not need to mirror those of her stablemates to be meaningful. Shafir has her own identity and wrestling approach, and the Amazonas Grand Prix gives her a setting that is separate from the usual AEW programming environment. Rather than entering a conventional singles feud, she will be competing in an international exhibition with a large field, unfamiliar opponents and the added pressure that comes with a debut in CMLL.

It is also a chance for fans who primarily follow CMLL to see how Shafir’s style translates in this atmosphere. Her mixed martial arts background has been a defining feature of her presentation, and the tournament may produce compelling stylistic clashes against quicker lucha-based competitors, high-flyers and fellow power wrestlers.

What Shafir’s Addition Means for October 23

There is no replacing the personal circumstances behind Blackheart’s withdrawal, and the priority remains with her and her family following the death of her brother. From the event perspective, however, CMLL has filled the open place with a wrestler capable of immediately adding credibility and a different kind of intensity to the international side.

Shafir’s first CMLL match will arrive in a high-profile setting rather than as a gradual introduction. The Amazonas Grand Prix places her alongside a broad lineup of accomplished women and gives her an immediate opportunity to stand out at Arena México. Whether her physical style leads to quick eliminations, difficult confrontations or new rivalries remains to be seen, but she will have no shortage of notable opponents available.

The October 23 card now features an AEW contingent of Shafir, Megan Bayne, Queen Aminata and Harley Cameron, plus a roster of international and CMLL talent that emphasizes the event’s global concept. For Shafir, the announcement represents a major debut. For CMLL, it strengthens an already diverse field for one of its prominent women’s showcases.

“The imposing AEW star, recognized for her experience in mixed martial arts and her aggressive fighting style, arrives to bolster the international contingent.”

With the field set to include wrestlers from multiple corners of the industry, the Amazonas Grand Prix at Arena México is positioned as a major cross-promotional showcase. Shafir’s addition ensures that her CMLL debut will be one of the central stories heading into October 23.
