Essential session cookie
sdy_session is a first-party session cookie. It connects your browser with server-side sign-in state and form protections, including the token used to reject forged submissions. The cookie does not contain your readable password.
It is configured as a session cookie, normally lasting for the browser session; browser session-restoration settings may preserve it. On the HTTPS site it uses Secure, HttpOnly and SameSite=Lax protections. Blocking it can prevent sign-in and forms from working.
Your preference record
sdy-consent is a first-party localStorage entry that remembers your selection in the site's preference banner. LocalStorage is browser storage rather than a cookie, and it remains until the site or your browser removes or replaces it. You can revisit the banner using Cookie choices in the footer or clear the site's storage in your browser settings.
Essential only keeps the site operating without optional preference features. Allow preferences permits optional settings to be remembered on this browser. The record of your choice is itself used to honor that choice. Neither button is permission for advertising or third-party audience analytics.
Anti-spam checks
If Google reCAPTCHA is configured, a protected form requests permission for its anti-spam check before loading it. When executed, reCAPTCHA can set Google's _GRECAPTCHA cookie for risk analysis. Google explains this in its reCAPTCHA FAQ. Google's own storage and processing are covered by its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Advertising and analytics
Third-party advertising and audience analytics are disabled by default. Our basic browser-preference banner is not a Google-certified consent management platform. Advertising must use the separate provider disclosures and consent controls configured for that service; choosing optional preferences here does not activate advertising consent.
The magazine's first-party popular-story counts use daily derived identifiers on the server and do not set a separate audience-tracking cookie. See the privacy policy for how those counts work.
Changing your mind
You can change a stored preference, clear this site's storage or use your browser's cookie controls. Removing browser storage does not unsubscribe you from email, revoke API tokens or delete your account; those choices are handled separately through newsletter links, your account or Contact.
