AEW’s roster activity appears set to continue with a major reported addition ahead of WrestleDream, as Ilja Dragunov is said to have signed with the company after resolving a visa situation. The former WWE United States Champion is also reportedly the subject of the mysterious vignette that aired during Wednesday’s special edition of AEW Collision, giving the promotion a conspicuous tease just days before one of its biggest events of the fall.

Dragunov’s reported signing would be another significant development during a period in which AEW has added several notable names to its lineup. Dani Luna, The New Level, and the Motor City Machine Guns have all joined the roster in recent months. Dragunov, however, would arrive with an especially distinct identity: an intense, physical in-ring style and a reputation for treating every major match as an all-out personal battle.

There remains one central question surrounding the reported deal: when will Dragunov actually appear? His debut has not been confirmed for WrestleDream, which takes place October 17 at Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Florida. With the vignette now on television so close to the pay-per-view, the possibility of a WrestleDream appearance is naturally drawing attention, but AEW could also choose to hold his first appearance for a subsequent television event.

The Collision Vignette Points Toward Dragunov

The video in question ran for 22 seconds and offered no spoken explanation. It showed a sharply dressed man moving through a nighttime setting while classical music played in the background. A metronome ticking back and forth provided the visual’s most distinctive audio cue, creating an atmosphere that felt controlled, dramatic, and increasingly tense.

That presentation is now reportedly connected to Dragunov. While the footage did not openly name him, the combination of a formal appearance, ominous pacing, and the metronome motif has given viewers plenty to dissect. AEW frequently uses short-form video packages to introduce or reintroduce wrestlers before a full reveal, and this vignette has placed Dragunov at the center of WrestleDream-week discussion.

The metronome is particularly notable because it suggests precision and inevitability rather than a straightforward action-focused teaser. It also offers AEW a visual language that could set Dragunov apart immediately if and when he appears. Rather than simply presenting a new signing in an in-ring interruption, the company appears positioned to establish a mood around his arrival.

That said, the vignette alone does not establish a date for Dragunov’s first match, his first opponent, or his initial division. AEW has a deep men’s roster across singles competition, tag team wrestling, and its championship picture, leaving numerous possible directions for the former WWE standout. Until he appears on screen and makes his intentions clear, any specific program remains speculative.

Dragunov’s WWE Departure Opened the Door

Dragunov left WWE over the summer after electing not to renew his contract. His reported move to AEW follows the resolution of visa matters that had apparently delayed the next step in his career. With that issue now said to be settled, the path is clear for him to begin work with AEW.

A move to AEW would place Dragunov in a company where hard-hitting, high-intensity matches are a regular part of the product. His arrival could add another formidable singles presence to a roster that already features a wide range of established champions, rising prospects, technical wrestlers, aerial specialists, and brawlers. Dragunov’s own calling card has been urgency. Whether he is fighting for a title, attempting to prove himself, or escalating a personal rivalry, he has generally brought a level of intensity that makes his matches feel consequential.

His past status as WWE United States Champion also gives AEW an immediately recognizable credential to reference as it introduces him to viewers who may be familiar with his previous work. At the same time, AEW will need to define what makes this stage different for him. A signature vignette campaign can be an effective first step, but the eventual debut segment and first feud will shape the early perception of his run.

WrestleDream would provide a sizable platform if AEW chooses to make Dragunov’s first appearance there. Pay-per-view debuts can generate a strong immediate reaction and establish a new arrival as a priority. On the other hand, keeping the reveal for television could allow AEW to give him more time and focus before assigning him to a major match. The only confirmed element at present is the reported signing and the reported connection between Dragunov and the Collision teaser.

Kairi Sane Has Held Discussions, But No Agreement Is Reported

Another former WWE champion who has recently been linked with AEW is Kairi Sane. Unlike Dragunov, however, her potential move has not reached the same reported stage. Sane and AEW officials have reportedly discussed the possibility of bringing “The Pirate Princess” into the company, but no agreement has been reached as of this week.

Sane exited WWE during a mass talent release in April 2026. Her status has led to interest in where she may wrestle next, particularly given the range of potential matches available should she eventually land in AEW. Still, discussions are not a contract, and there is no indication that Sane is set for an imminent AEW appearance at WrestleDream or elsewhere.

That distinction matters during a week in which AEW is actively teasing one reported former WWE signing. Dragunov’s vignette has created a tangible on-screen hook for fans. Sane, by comparison, remains a possibility rather than a confirmed addition. Until a deal is completed, her future should be treated as unresolved.

A Mercedes Moné Connection Adds to the Conversation

One reason Sane’s name has generated particular AEW interest is her history with reigning AEW Women’s World Champion Mercedes Moné. The two have wrestled each other in both WWE and New Japan Pro-Wrestling, giving any future AEW encounter an established competitive backdrop.

Moné heads into WrestleDream with a championship defense against “The Toxic Spider” Thekla. Thekla is also a former opponent of Sane, adding another layer of familiarity around the women’s title picture even though Sane is not confirmed for the event. WrestleDream’s championship match will be about Moné and Thekla, but the broader conversation surrounding Sane illustrates the potential depth of opponents AEW could add to its women’s division if discussions eventually lead to a deal.

For now, Moné’s focus is firmly on Thekla. Any consideration of a future match with Sane is premature without a completed agreement. Yet their prior encounters in WWE and New Japan Pro-Wrestling make the matchup an obvious point of interest should Sane ultimately join the company.

WrestleDream Week Could Bring Answers

AEW arrives in Orlando with attention split between what is announced for WrestleDream and what may be waiting just beyond it. Dragunov’s reported signing and the cryptic Collision footage have created the strongest immediate mystery. The timing makes him a name to watch throughout the weekend, even though a pay-per-view debut has not been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Sane remains a separate developing story. The reported conversations with AEW show that her name is in the mix, but there is currently no deal to announce. It would be a mistake to treat the two situations as identical: one is reportedly complete following a visa resolution, while the other remains at the discussion stage.

If Dragunov does appear soon, AEW will gain a proven and intensely charismatic performer with the opportunity to make an instant impact. If Sane’s talks eventually progress, the women’s roster could gain another accomplished wrestler with built-in history against its reigning champion. WrestleDream may provide the next clue on Dragunov’s immediate future, while the situation involving Sane remains one to monitor beyond the October 17 event.
