Grayson Waller has never been shy about declaring himself the center of attention, and the reigning NXT Champion is taking that attitude into John Cena’s upcoming visit to WWE NXT.
Cena is set to appear on the October 4 episode of NXT, an announcement that has evidently created major excitement around the brand. Waller, however, says he was less impressed by the reaction he witnessed backstage. Rather than joining the celebration, he positioned himself as the man who now sets the standards in NXT — and suggested that even Cena should recognize whose territory he is entering.
Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Waller described hearing NXT talent react to the graphic confirming Cena’s appearance. In Waller’s view, the enthusiasm felt less like the response of competitors preparing for a major moment and more like that of fans meeting one of their heroes.
“I was backstage tonight when the graphic came out, you should’ve heard the kids, ‘John Cena is coming!’ It was so sad, it was tough. I felt like I was at a fan meet and greet or something, they’re all excited. It put a smile on my face too.”

That dismissive response is consistent with Waller’s approach as champion. The Australian star has routinely thrived on confrontation, whether through his in-ring work or his ability to antagonize opponents and audiences on the microphone. Cena’s arrival gives him another enormous name to provoke, and Waller made sure to point out that he has already shared the ring and traded words with the 16-time world champion.
Waller points to past encounters with Cena
Waller said he is uniquely qualified within the current NXT locker room to speak on Cena because he has been in the ring with him twice. He also emphasized that he has gone microphone-to-microphone with Cena and come out of those encounters intact.
“I’m the only one here who’s been in the ring with John Cena twice. I’ve been on the mic against John Cena and I survived, not everyone does.”
The statement is a pointed reminder of Waller’s history on WWE programming. Cena has long been one of the company’s most formidable talkers, capable of changing the direction of a segment with a cutting remark and often placing younger talent under a bright spotlight. Waller is framing his previous interactions with Cena as proof that he is not simply another prospect eager for a photo opportunity or a few words of encouragement.
Instead, Waller believes Cena should arrive in NXT with respect for the champion and for the brand’s present hierarchy. He jokingly laid out a set of expectations for Cena before the WWE icon walks through the door.
“All I hope for John is that next Wednesday, he wipes his feet and he knocks on the door and he asks me permission to come into my house. If he wants to get in my ring, he needs to ask permission too.”
The message is deliberately arrogant, but it also establishes the obvious possibility of a confrontation when Cena appears. Whether Cena comes to NXT strictly to address the John Cena Classic, interact with the roster, or become involved in a more direct exchange with Waller remains to be seen. Waller, though, has made his preference clear: any discussion of the future of NXT should include the man holding its championship.
The John Cena Classic could put NXT talent in the spotlight
Waller speculated that Cena could be appearing to discuss the John Cena Classic and the opportunities it may offer NXT Superstars. While he did not provide details on the event or format, he made the case that he already understands what it means to capitalize on opportunities within WWE.
“I’m sure he’s maybe talking about this John Cena Classic, giving some NXT superstars an opportunity. Those opportunities, I’ve taken. Maybe he needs to come sit down under my learning tree and I can tell him how things run in NXT now.”
That is a particularly striking reversal of the usual dynamic surrounding Cena appearances. Cena has spent years serving as an aspirational figure for wrestlers coming through WWE, and his presence is often viewed as a chance for younger names to learn from a performer who has headlined WrestleMania, carried the company through multiple eras, and built a career that stretches far beyond the ring.
Waller is turning that idea on its head. He is not presenting himself as someone who needs Cena’s guidance. He is presenting Cena as the visitor who needs an introduction to the version of NXT that Waller says he now runs.
It is also a claim that fits Waller’s current position. As NXT Champion, he holds the brand’s top prize and enters a major title defense at NXT Halloween Havoc. His confidence is not subtle, and neither is his belief that Cena’s announced visit is connected to Waller’s reign rather than a broader interest in the NXT roster.
Waller takes a shot at Tony D’Angelo’s title reign
Waller did not stop with Cena. He also used the conversation to take aim at his Halloween Havoc challenger, Tony D’Angelo. Waller argued that Cena was not making trips to NXT during D’Angelo’s time as champion, but is now coming to the brand because Waller is the one in charge.
“It’s true, he’s coming down here because of what I’m doing. Was John Cena coming around the last year or so when Tony was champion? No, but he wants to come down here now. I guess it’s like, maybe it’s a championship celebration. Maybe he’s going to do a rap song for me or something, celebrate the fact that I run NXT now.”
The rap-song comment is another obvious jab at Cena’s well-known history as the Doctor of Thuganomics. More importantly, it adds another layer to the growing tension between Waller and D’Angelo ahead of Halloween Havoc.
Waller is scheduled to defend the NXT Championship against D’Angelo at the event, and his comments make clear that he wants to define the contrast between their respective reigns. In Waller’s telling, D’Angelo’s championship period did not draw the attention of a superstar on Cena’s level. Waller’s reign, meanwhile, is supposedly important enough to bring Cena back to NXT.
D’Angelo will undoubtedly have his own response to that claim. The challenger has a direct issue with Waller beyond championship aspirations, as Waller previously broke into D’Angelo’s home. Waller addressed his reasoning for that act elsewhere during the same interview, adding further personal tension to a match that is already built around the most valuable prize on the brand.
A major week for the NXT Champion
The timing of Cena’s appearance could be significant for Waller. NXT Halloween Havoc is ahead, and Waller is facing a challenger with a deeply personal grievance. A Cena appearance before that title defense could raise the temperature around the champion even further, especially if Waller chooses to confront him directly.
Waller’s approach carries a familiar risk. Calling out Cena can generate attention, but it also invites a response from a performer who has repeatedly shown he is willing to verbally dismantle opponents, particularly those who underestimate him. Waller says he has survived that environment before, and he clearly sees another exchange as an opportunity rather than a threat.
For NXT’s younger talent, Cena’s visit represents a rare chance to share space with one of WWE’s defining modern stars. Waller is refusing to view it through that lens. He wants the locker room, Cena, and D’Angelo to understand that he considers NXT his house, its ring his ring, and its spotlight his to control.
Whether that confidence remains justified after Halloween Havoc is the central question. Before then, Waller has another obstacle to deal with: John Cena is coming to NXT on October 4, and the champion has already made it clear that he expects the visitor to show respect.
