Sonnen, however, chose a much different tone in his response. The retired UFC star wrote simply, “I despise you.” The lack of additional context immediately made the reply stand out, particularly because of the very direct contrast between Cena’s encouraging sentiment and Sonnen’s antagonistic reaction.

Whether Sonnen’s post represented genuine irritation or a deliberately exaggerated piece of online heel work is unclear. WWE producer Shane Helms replied to Sonnen with laughing emojis, suggesting that at least some involved in the conversation viewed it as humorous.
