TNA Wrestling has announced that Ricky Sosa is dealing with a severe back injury and is currently unable to compete.

The update was delivered during the injury report segment on the October 22 episode of TNA Impact. TNA identified the October 15 No. 1 contenders ladder match for the TNA World Championship as the incident in which Sosa sustained the injury. While the company confirmed that Sosa is not medically able to wrestle at present, it did not provide a timetable for his return to in-ring action.

Sosa’s injury occurred during a particularly hazardous sequence involving Moose. In the ladder match, Moose powerbombed Sosa out of the ring and attempted to send him through a ladder that had been positioned upright. Sosa’s back grazed the ladder before he hit the floor. The spot immediately stood out because of the lack of protection around the landing, and TNA has now tied that sequence to the back issue that will keep Sosa on the sidelines.

TNA confirms Sosa cannot compete

TNA’s weekly injury report has become a regular part of Impact, providing status updates on members of the roster and, where available, projected recovery windows. In Sosa’s case, the company was definitive about his immediate status: he is unable to compete. What remains unknown is the length of his absence.

That uncertainty is significant for a wrestler who had been gaining ground since joining the company earlier this year. A severe back injury can affect more than a wrestler’s ability to take bumps. It can limit training, travel, conditioning, and the day-to-day preparation required to remain ready for television. Until TNA offers a further medical update, there is no indication of when Sosa may be cleared to resume matches.

The announcement also places a temporary halt on Sosa’s momentum at a point when he had moved through several notable programs. Since arriving under contract, he had already worked with established names and taken meaningful wins that positioned him as a developing act within the promotion.

The ladder-match spot with Moose

Ladder matches are built around risk, with wrestlers frequently battling in and around metal ladders while also competing at an elevated pace. The No. 1 contenders match on October 15 had the added stakes of determining who would move into contention for the TNA World Championship.

During the bout, Moose attempted the powerbomb that sent Sosa from the ring toward the propped-up ladder. Rather than crashing cleanly through it, Sosa’s back caught the ladder before he fell to the floor. The nature of the landing created an obvious concern, particularly given how exposed the back is during a move of that kind.

TNA has not announced a diagnosis beyond describing the injury as severe, and no further details regarding treatment, a possible return date, or whether Sosa will make television appearances while unable to wrestle have been disclosed. For now, the key point is that he has been removed from active in-ring competition.

The timing is difficult for Sosa, whose recent TNA run had begun to establish a clearer place for him on the roster. The ladder match itself represented a major opportunity, placing him in a championship-related setting alongside a prominent name in Moose. Instead, the aftermath has left his next steps dependent on recovery.

Sosa’s first year under TNA contract

Sosa officially signed with TNA at Sacrifice in March. The signing marked an important step for the European wrestler, who entered the company with an opportunity to make an impression in a deeper and increasingly competitive roster environment.

His first major rivalry after signing was with Eric Young. Young’s experience and standing made the program a valuable early test for Sosa, who was being asked to prove himself against a veteran presence. The feud produced one of Sosa’s most important results to date when he defeated Young on the Countdown to Slammiversary in June.

That victory gave Sosa a defining early accomplishment under the TNA banner. Beating a wrestler with Young’s background can serve as a turning point for an emerging talent, and it helped create the sense that Sosa could become a more regular factor in the company’s bigger stories.

Following the Young program, Sosa shifted his focus toward The System. The group has been a major force in TNA, and the feud gave Sosa another chance to work in a high-profile environment. Rather than being limited to a single showcase victory, he continued into a rivalry that carried him toward one of the company’s marquee events.

Bound for Glory win over Eddie Edwards

Sosa’s conflict with The System reached its conclusion at Bound for Glory earlier in October. There, he earned a victory over the group’s leader, Eddie Edwards. The win was another meaningful result for Sosa, especially because it came against an accomplished former world champion and a central figure in one of TNA’s most visible factions.

Defeating Edwards brought the rivalry to a successful conclusion for Sosa and reinforced the progress he had made since March. In a relatively short span, he had moved from his signing announcement to a prominent feud with Eric Young, a victory during Slammiversary weekend, a program against The System, and a Bound for Glory win over Edwards.

That sequence makes the current injury setback more consequential. Sosa was not simply returning to television after a quiet stretch; he had been building a record of victories over experienced opposition. His absence leaves TNA without a wrestler who had recently demonstrated the ability to emerge from major programs with momentum on his side.

It also raises questions about how the promotion will handle any plans that may have involved Sosa following the ladder match. TNA has not announced any replacement, revised match direction, or storyline adjustment connected to his injury. With no estimated timeframe available, the company’s immediate approach will likely become clearer only through future episodes of Impact.

What comes next for Sosa

At this stage, the most important development is Sosa’s health. TNA’s language makes clear that this is not a routine short-term absence, but the company has not offered specifics that would allow for a reliable prediction about his recovery. Any assumption about a return date would be premature.

For Sosa, the positive is that his work prior to the injury has created a substantial foundation to return to. His TNA tenure already includes victories over Eric Young and Eddie Edwards, as well as a completed rivalry with The System. Those results remain part of his standing even as his in-ring activity pauses.

For TNA, the injury report provides an official explanation for why Sosa will not be competing in the immediate future. The company will now have to navigate its championship and roster plans without him until he is cleared. The No. 1 contenders ladder match was meant to be a pathway toward the TNA World Championship picture, but the aftermath has instead turned into a serious interruption for one of the company’s newer signees.

Sosa’s status is therefore one to watch in the weeks ahead. TNA has confirmed the severe back injury, confirmed that he cannot compete, and left the timetable open. Until additional information is released, his return remains undetermined.
