Shiloh Hill has opened up about the facial fracture that forced him away from in-ring competition during the summer of 2026, revealing that the injury was initially far more alarming than he understood at the time.
The WWE NXT prospect had been sidelined after suffering a break in his upper jawbone. While speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Hill described the unusual symptoms that led to the diagnosis, including a sudden buildup of air in his face after he blew his nose. What began as a confusing and seemingly minor issue quickly became a medical concern with the potential to keep him out for an unknown period and even require a surgical plate.
Hill is now back working NXT house shows, and he is scheduled to face NARAKU on the October 6 episode of NXT on The CW. His return to activity comes after a recovery that, by his account, moved faster than initially expected.
A strange symptom revealed a serious injury
Hill said he did not immediately realize he had suffered a fracture. In fact, the first sign that something was wrong came after he blew his nose and experienced an abnormal swelling in his face.

“Funny enough, I didn’t even know I was hurt. I blew my nose and my face filled with air, and I thought I ate something weird or whatever but I blew out the bottom of my maxillary sinus,” Hill said. “So when I blew my nose, all the air came out into my face instead of going out my nose, and I got all the way home. It was literally in the shower at home when it happened.”
The maxillary sinus is located in the cheek area beneath the eye, making an injury in that region particularly concerning for someone involved in the physical demands of professional wrestling. Hill’s description illustrated why the issue became obvious quickly: air that would normally exit through the nose instead moved into the tissues of his face.
Rather than immediately connecting the swelling to a fracture, Hill first believed it could have been a reaction to something he ate. He contacted a trainer to ask whether he needed something as routine as allergy medication. The response changed the situation immediately.
“I texted the trainer like, ‘Dawg, I need to take Benadryl or something?’ Because my whole face puffed up, and he was like, ‘Nah, you gotta come in tomorrow. That usually means you broke a bone.’ I was like, ‘Ah!’”
That early uncertainty is understandable given the way Hill described the onset of the issue. There was no indication in his comments that he immediately recognized a singular moment in the ring as the definitive cause. Instead, the fracture became apparent through the aftermath and the unusual physical response when he blew his nose.
SummerSlam appearance was called off
The injury also affected Hill’s planned WWE SummerSlam weekend schedule. He had been set to travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for meet-and-greet appearances tied to the event. However, the medical risks related to flying meant that he was not permitted to board a plane.
For an athlete dealing with trapped air in the facial area, the pressure changes associated with air travel presented a potentially serious problem. Hill recalled being told that the amount of air in his face made flying unsafe.
“Now it’s laughable. There was a minute when they first discovered it, that I’m like, ‘Yeah, you might have to put a plate in it,’ all this stuff. ‘We really don’t know what the timeline’s gonna be…’ Oh, and I couldn’t fly. I was supposed to go to SummerSlam for some meet and greets but they wouldn’t let me get on the plane because they were like, ‘Your face could physically pop with the pressure’ because there was so much air in my face.”
Missing the SummerSlam-related appearances was a disappointing consequence, particularly at a time when live-event visibility and fan interaction can be valuable for a developing WWE performer. Still, the decision to keep Hill from flying reflected the severity of the medical concern at that stage.
Hill’s comments also show how quickly the outlook shifted from uncertainty to concern. The possibility of surgery and a plate being inserted was discussed, while the length of his absence was not clear. For wrestlers, facial injuries can carry particular complications because of the likelihood of accidental contact, falls, and the demands placed on the head and upper body during matches and training.
A quicker-than-expected recovery
Fortunately for Hill, the situation ultimately did not require the procedure that had been considered. He said he believes a cold may have played a role in how the air was able to leave the affected area, accelerating the recovery process.
“I think what did it is I had a cold, and I was sniffing a bunch, and I think I might have sucked the air back into the sinus — like out of my face — because the doctor was like, ‘This is the fastest I’ve ever seen based off the MRI and where you’re at. Like, the air leave your body.’”
Hill stressed that he can look back on the experience with some humor now, but that was not his mindset when the fracture was first found. The potential of being out indefinitely, along with the suggestion that surgery could be needed, understandably created anxiety about what came next.
“Now it’s laughable but yeah, for a minute I was like, ‘Man, I might be out,’ but fortunately, I don’t have to do that.”
His return to NXT house-show competition is an encouraging sign after the summer setback. House shows allow NXT performers to gain valuable ring time in front of live crowds, develop chemistry with opponents, and continue building momentum outside the weekly television environment. For Hill, simply being able to resume that part of his schedule represents a significant turnaround from the uncertainty he described.
Hill set for NARAKU match on NXT
The next notable step in Hill’s return is his scheduled match against NARAKU on the October 6 edition of NXT on The CW. The bout will give Hill a televised opportunity to continue moving forward after a recovery that temporarily threatened to halt his momentum.
NARAKU has brought an intimidating presence to the NXT landscape, and the match presents a challenging assignment for Hill as he works to establish himself on the brand. It will also place a spotlight on his conditioning and readiness following the time he missed, although Hill’s recent house-show appearances have already indicated that he has resumed competing.
In WWE developmental, interruptions can be especially frustrating. Prospects are often working to refine their presentation, build familiarity with the audience, and earn opportunities on weekly television. A medical issue can disrupt that process without warning. Hill’s case was additionally unusual because the injury did not present itself in a way that made its seriousness immediately obvious.
There is an important difference between a performer choosing to fight through routine soreness and a medical situation requiring specialized evaluation. Hill’s decision to contact the trainer once his face swelled up helped lead to a diagnosis that addressed the issue before he attempted to continue traveling or competing without answers. The warning against flying underscores how a seemingly strange symptom could have created a far more dangerous scenario if ignored.
Turning a scare into a return
Hill’s story is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wrestling injuries. Not every setback arrives through a dramatic in-ring accident visible to fans. Sometimes the most concerning developments emerge later, through symptoms that appear unrelated or easy to dismiss at first.
In this case, an upper-jaw fracture and damage involving the bottom of Hill’s maxillary sinus resulted in facial swelling, travel restrictions, and concern over a possible surgical procedure. Yet the recovery progressed quickly enough that Hill avoided the plate that had been discussed and has been able to return to NXT competition.
With the NARAKU match scheduled for October 6, Hill has a clear opportunity to put the difficult summer behind him. The incident may now be something he can laugh about, as he said, but the period of uncertainty was real. His quick return makes the story a positive one, even if it began with a frightening medical scare and the loss of a planned SummerSlam weekend appearance in Minneapolis.
