The road to Grayson Waller’s first NXT Championship defense has taken shape, and it will require six prospective challengers to survive an unusual test before any of them can stand across the ring from the new titleholder.
NXT General Manager Robert Stone has announced a high-stakes six-man tag team match for next week’s episode of WWE NXT. The bout will feature Tony D’Angelo, Mason Rook, and Saquon Shugars against EK Prosper, Cruz Montana, and Keanu Carver. The three wrestlers on the winning side will not receive an immediate championship match. Instead, they will advance to face one another in a triple threat number one contender’s match the following week.
The winner of that three-way contest will earn the right to challenge Waller for the NXT Championship at a date and location that have not yet been announced.

Waller became NXT Champion at NXT Heatwave, ending Tony D’Angelo’s reign in a fatal four-way main event. D’Angelo entered that match as champion, but Waller scored the decisive pinfall to leave with the title. Cruz Montana and Zilla Fatu were also involved in the championship bout.
That result remains central to the new contender search. D’Angelo has the most direct claim among the announced participants because he was the man Waller pinned to win the championship. A victory in the upcoming six-man tag would move D’Angelo another step toward a rematch and a chance to reclaim the title he lost at Heatwave.
Montana has a similarly important connection to the championship picture. He was part of the fatal four-way at Heatwave and did not leave as champion, but he was positioned in the match that changed the direction of the brand. Montana, formerly known as Mike Santana, recently signed with WWE, as did Fatu. While Fatu is not among the six men in the upcoming contender matches, Montana has an immediate opportunity to separate himself from the rest of the field.
Waller’s return to NXT followed a period of inactivity on WWE’s main roster. Since coming back to the brand, he has rapidly placed himself at the top of the division with the Heatwave victory. Now, his first challenger could be a familiar rival seeking unfinished business, or it could be a wrestler who has never previously faced him.
Familiar Opponents and Fresh Matchups
Of the six announced names, Waller has previously shared the ring with D’Angelo and Montana. That history gives both men a degree of familiarity with the champion, even if the stakes of an NXT Championship match would elevate any meeting between them.
D’Angelo’s case is especially straightforward. The former champion knows exactly how Waller took the title from him, and he has an opportunity to prove that the Heatwave result was not the final word between them. However, D’Angelo cannot focus exclusively on Waller. He must first function alongside Rook and Shugars, then potentially defeat both of them in a triple threat.
Montana also enters with an argument based on his Heatwave participation, but his route is no easier. Prosper and Carver will be his partners in the six-man tag, and either could become his obstacle in the following week’s proposed number one contender match. Montana may be one of the more recognizable participants in the title hunt, yet the format gives every member of the winning team an identical opportunity once the triple threat begins.
Rook, Shugars, Prosper, and Carver represent the possibility of a completely new championship rivalry for Waller. None of those four has faced the NXT Champion before. That means an upset during this two-week process could produce a first-time title match and give Waller a challenger without any established in-ring history against him.
That uncertainty is significant. A champion can prepare for an opponent whose habits and prior encounters are known. It is more difficult to anticipate a competitor who has not shared the ring with him at all. Waller will surely be watching next week’s tag match closely, but the structure of the contest could make it hard to identify one clear favorite until the winning trio is determined.
D’Angelo and Montana Carry the Most Obvious Claims
The field may be wide open, but D’Angelo and Montana arrive with the clearest links to the recent NXT Championship match. D’Angelo was the reigning champion at Heatwave. Montana was part of the fatal four-way that created Waller’s reign. Both men can argue that they were close to the title at the moment it changed hands.
Still, neither competitor has been handed a direct rematch. Stone’s decision establishes that no one is receiving priority solely because of what happened at Heatwave. D’Angelo must earn a second meeting with Waller, and Montana must earn a singles championship opportunity that did not come out of the fatal four-way.
The arrangement also puts the spotlight on Rook, Shugars, Prosper, and Carver. Each has been placed one match away from a number one contender bout, an opening that could dramatically change their position in NXT. A win next week would place any of them in a triple threat where one decisive fall could secure an NXT Championship match.
In a traditional singles eliminator, a wrestler can focus on one opponent and one strategy. The six-man tag is less predictable. Tags can shift the pace, rivalries can form unexpectedly, and a teammate’s decision can alter the course of the entire match. The winning side needs enough unity to advance, but no member can afford to lose sight of the fact that the next stage is a three-man fight.
Two More Championship Matches Set for Next Week
The NXT Championship contender match will be part of a loaded upcoming episode, as two other titles are also scheduled to be defended.
Kelani Jordan will put the NXT Women’s Championship on the line against Jaida Parker. Jordan’s defense gives Parker a major opportunity to take the top prize in the women’s division, while the champion will look to continue her reign against a dangerous challenger.
Jackson Drake is also scheduled for a championship defense. The NXT North American Champion will face Tavion Heights with his title at stake.
