Rich Swann is headed to TNA Bound For Glory with a chance to reclaim the X-Division Championship.
Swann defeated LJ Cleary in an X-Division Championship qualifying match on the September 17 edition of TNA Impact, securing a place in the six-way scramble that will crown a new champion. Bound For Glory is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, in Tampa, Florida.
The victory makes Swann the fourth announced participant in the title match. Fabian Aichner, KC Navarro, and Cedric Alexander are also set for the scramble, with Alexander entering the championship picture through his rematch clause. Two places in the six-man field remain unfilled.
The X-Division title has been vacant since Lockdown in August, when Leon Slater chose to exercise Option C following his second reign as champion. The stipulation allows an X-Division Champion to relinquish that title in exchange for a TNA World Championship match. Slater will challenge reigning TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth in the Bound For Glory main event, leaving the X-Division division to determine a new standard-bearer earlier on the card.

Swann withstands Cleary in high-speed qualifier
Swann and Cleary approached their qualifier with the urgency expected of a match that could change the direction of a wrestler's Bound For Glory. Cleary established control early, bringing intensity and athleticism to the former X-Division Champion before Swann shifted the momentum with a brief dance break that energized the crowd.
Once Swann found his rhythm, the pace accelerated. He connected with a sequence of three kicks, then continued to target Cleary outside the ring. After placing Cleary in a chair at ringside, Swann ran around the ring and drove two consecutive kicks into Cleary's face.
Cleary did not remain on the defensive for long. He recovered, returned to the ring, and launched himself through the ropes with a dive onto Swann. The exchange reflected the kind of rapid-fire offense that has long defined the X-Division: neither competitor had much time to recover, and every opening carried the potential to end the match.
Swann again rocked Cleary with a kick after Cleary came off the ropes, but Cleary responded with a double stomp. Swann later went to the top rope and landed a splash, though Cleary kicked out at two. Cleary then connected with an enzuigiri that had eluded him earlier in the match, earning a two-count of his own.
The closing stretch featured the biggest moves from both wrestlers. Swann delivered a clean poison rana, only for Cleary to answer with the Canadian Destroyer he calls the Irish Goodbye. That dramatic counter was not enough to put Swann away.
Swann survived, fired back with a flurry of strikes, and finally ended Cleary's challenge with his Phoenix Splash. The pinfall sent Swann to Tampa and kept alive his pursuit of a second X-Division Championship reign.
A familiar championship pursuit for Rich Swann
Swann enters the Bound For Glory scramble as a former one-time X-Division Champion, giving him a direct connection to the championship's history as well as a clear understanding of what will be at stake in Tampa. The victory over Cleary was more than a successful television match; it positioned Swann within the most significant X-Division title decision since the belt was vacated at Lockdown.
A six-way scramble presents a very different challenge from the singles qualifier Swann won on Impact. His match with Cleary gave him the chance to focus his preparation on one opponent and eventually capitalize with the Phoenix Splash. At Bound For Glory, Swann will need to contend with five other competitors and the unpredictable nature of a multi-person title match.
That environment could reward Swann's speed, timing, and familiarity with high-risk exchanges. It also means that his path to victory will not necessarily require him to defeat every opponent directly. A scramble can turn in a moment when a competitor finds an opening after another wrestler has created the damage, making awareness and positioning every bit as important as offense.
For Swann, the qualifier showed that he can absorb a major counterattack and still recover in time to finish a match. Cleary's Irish Goodbye appeared capable of changing the outcome, especially after Swann had already landed the poison rana. Swann's resilience allowed him to survive that reversal and create one final burst of offense.
Four contenders confirmed, two still to come
With Swann now qualified, the current Bound For Glory field consists of Swann, Aichner, Navarro, and Alexander. Each man arrives through a different route, reinforcing how open the championship landscape has become following Slater's decision.
Alexander's inclusion through his rematch clause gives the former champion a direct claim to the vacant prize. Swann earned his opportunity by defeating Cleary in a competitive qualifier. Aichner and Navarro had already secured their own places before Swann's win, and their presence ensures that the match will feature a mix of wrestlers pursuing their own breakthrough and those looking to strengthen their standing in the division.
The remaining two qualifying spots will shape the final identity of the scramble. Until those entrants are known, every confirmed competitor has to prepare for possibilities rather than a settled set of opponents. That uncertainty is part of what makes the Bound For Glory match consequential: the next X-Division Champion will emerge from a field built around a vacant title, multiple paths to entry, and a division in transition.
Swann's win also ends Cleary's immediate attempt to reach one of TNA's biggest annual events. Cleary repeatedly pushed Swann to the limit, from the dive through the ropes to the double stomp, enzuigiri, and Irish Goodbye. He came close to stopping the former champion, but Swann's ability to answer late proved decisive.
Leon Slater's Option C decision changes Bound For Glory
The scramble is taking place because Slater made a major career choice at Lockdown. After winning the X-Division Championship for the second time in his career, Slater elected to invoke Option C and vacate the title rather than continue his reign.
Option C has immediate consequences for both championships. Slater now moves into the TNA World Championship main event at Bound For Glory, where he will challenge Nic Nemeth. At the same time, the X-Division Championship is available for a new champion to emerge on the same event.
The arrangement puts the X-Division at the center of Bound For Glory in two distinct ways. Slater's world-title challenge represents the opportunity traditionally associated with Option C, while the six-way scramble will establish who takes over the championship he left behind. The division's present and its future are therefore connected across two pivotal matches.
For Swann, the road is now clear: he has qualified, he knows the date and location, and he has a chance to add a second X-Division title reign to his record. The task will be considerably more complicated than his battle with Cleary, but the qualifier established that Swann can still deliver when the stakes demand it.
Bound For Glory on October 11 will determine whether Swann turns that momentum into championship gold, whether Alexander uses his rematch-clause opportunity to regain the title, or whether Aichner, Navarro, or one of the yet-to-be-announced entrants seizes the vacant championship. Before Slater meets Nemeth in the main event, TNA's X-Division will have a new champion.
