Rey Mysterio is not closing the book on his rivalry with Dominik Mysterio.
The WWE Hall of Famer addressed the deeply personal conflict with his son during a recent interview, making it clear that he still expects their issues to bring them back into the ring. Rey did not merely express interest in another match. He suggested that, if the right moment arrives, he wants the next chapter of the Mysterio family feud to include stakes that carry far more weight than the mask-based consequences that have become central to their history.
Dominik has increasingly positioned himself as someone who wants to eclipse his father’s legacy rather than live within it. That tension has long driven the fractured relationship between the two men, and Rey’s latest comments show that he does not intend to simply surrender his name, his standing, or his place in WWE to his son.
Rey Mysterio responds to Dominik’s demands
At the center of the current discussion is the idea that Dominik wants Rey’s mask and an apology as a condition for ending their feud. For Rey, that demand cuts much deeper than a typical wrestling rivalry. The mask is inseparable from the identity he built over a career that made him one of the most celebrated luchadores in wrestling history. An apology, meanwhile, would represent Rey accepting Dominik’s version of their family conflict.

Rey pushed back strongly on the notion that Dominik has earned the right to dictate those terms.
“That’s pretty deep for him to say that. At the end of the day, I believe I have much more tricks up my sleeve than he does. If he thinks he’s going to step all over me, retire me, take my name and have me apologize to him for what apparently I have done, maybe I shouldn’t have helped him break into the business.”
Rey’s response was not solely about the prospect of losing a match or being embarrassed by Dominik. It was also about the path that brought his son into the profession. Rey noted that he entered wrestling at 14 years old and described how difficult it was to break in at that time. He contrasted that experience with what he sees as a much easier path into wrestling today.
“Maybe he should have grinded on his own and scratched and clawed just like I did at the age of 14 when I first broke into the business, which was really tough back then. Now, it’s much easier to get into the business. It’s not like before.”
The remarks underline the generational divide in their story. Rey’s perspective is shaped by the sacrifices and work required to establish himself as an elite performer. Dominik, in contrast, has grown into a major WWE figure while carrying the Mysterio name and having begun his career alongside his father. Rey’s comments suggest that he believes Dominik has failed to appreciate the significance of that opportunity.
A match with more than a mask at stake
While Rey dismissed the idea that he will be pushed aside by Dominik, he also made clear that he wants the chance to settle matters under meaningful conditions. The former world champion said he would welcome a bout against Dominik in which something truly significant is on the line.
“I would love and wait to see that day come to fruition. I would love to step into the ring with Dom and put something on the line. Something that means much more than just a mask.”
Rey did not identify what that higher-stakes prize or consequence would be. As a result, the exact terms of a potential rematch remain uncertain. Still, the statement creates a clear direction for the rivalry: Rey is willing to compete against Dominik again, but he wants the encounter to mean more than another symbolic clash over the Mysterio mask.
That is notable given how much the mask already means within Rey’s career. Mask stipulations have historically carried enormous importance in lucha libre, where a mask can symbolize a wrestler’s identity, heritage, and reputation. Rey saying he wants a consequence beyond that level indicates just how seriously he views his unresolved issues with Dominik.
For Dominik, another contest against his father would offer an opportunity to continue establishing himself as the Mysterio who represents the future. Since separating from Rey and aligning himself with The Judgment Day, Dominik has embraced a more confrontational role and repeatedly used his father’s legacy as a target. His current position makes any renewed conflict with Rey feel different from their earlier confrontations: Dominik is no longer simply the younger wrestler trying to prove himself, but a prominent figure seeking to take ownership of the family name.
Dominik’s AAA Mega Title loss adds to a difficult stretch
The discussion around a possible Mysterio rematch arrives shortly after a major development for Dominik outside the immediate WWE ring. At TripleMania 34: Night 2, Dominik lost the AAA Mega Title to El Grande Americano.
The championship defeat adds another layer to the ongoing situation involving Dominik, Rey, and El Grande Americano. Rey’s interest in putting something substantial on the line against Dominik comes after his son saw a major title reign end, while El Grande Americano emerged from TripleMania 34: Night 2 with the AAA Mega Title.
There is no confirmation that Rey’s proposed match with Dominik would involve the AAA Mega Title, the Mysterio name, a mask, or any other specific stipulation. Rey only stated that he wants the stakes to exceed a mask. Until a match is formally set and terms are announced, the details remain open.
Even so, the title change provides a timely backdrop for Dominik’s rivalry with Rey. Dominik’s stated ambition to surpass his father is tied to achievement as much as it is tied to family resentment. Losing the AAA Mega Title gives him a setback at the same time Rey is openly discussing a future showdown that could force the two men to risk something even more valuable.
Rey was unable to compete on Raw
Rey also appeared during the opening segment of Raw, though he was not medically cleared to wrestle after an attack by Omos. The Judgment Day challenged Rey and Stephanie Vaquer to a tag team match, but El Grande Americano took Rey’s place in the bout.
The resulting match saw El Grande Americano team with Vaquer against Dominik and Liv Morgan. It did not produce a decisive winner, as the contest ended in a disqualification after The Judgment Day interfered and took out El Grande Americano and Vaquer.
The segment kept Rey connected to the conflict despite his inability to compete. It also placed Dominik opposite El Grande Americano again following the AAA Mega Title change, while The Judgment Day’s interference ensured that none of the central rivalries received a clean resolution.
For Rey, the inability to wrestle on Raw did not diminish the message of his interview. If anything, his comments make clear that he is looking beyond a temporary absence from competition. He sees another match with Dominik as an eventuality and wants it to be a definitive confrontation rather than a routine rematch.
The Mysterio feud remains personal
Few WWE rivalries carry the built-in emotional history of Rey and Dominik Mysterio. Their conflict is not just about victories, championships, or faction warfare. It is rooted in the relationship between a father who helped introduce his son to the business and a son who now believes he should be the one defining the family legacy.
Rey’s comments reveal that he remains unwilling to accept Dominik’s demands for the mask, the Mysterio name, and an apology. At the same time, Rey is not avoiding the fight.
