Nigel McGuinness has never hidden the significance of stepping back through the ropes after more than a decade away from competition. For the English veteran, the opportunity to wrestle again in London’s Wembley Stadium has carried a weight far beyond a typical match assignment. It has represented a return to a part of his life that he had accepted was over.
McGuinness returned to the ring at AEW All In 2024 at Wembley, entering the Casino Gauntlet match in what was his first bout in more than 10 years. He later wrestled again at All In, facing Jon Moxley. Speaking with Renee Paquette ahead of that encounter, McGuinness reflected on the emotional shift that has come with an in-ring return he once did not expect to receive.
“I will forever feel blessed to have that opportunity to wrestle again,” McGuinness said. “I thought my career was long, long gone. People used to talk to me, you know, [and say] ‘One more match, Nigel.’ [I would say] No, ship has sailed.”
Those words explain why McGuinness’ involvement at Wembley has resonated so strongly. A wrestler returning after a lengthy absence can often be presented as a nostalgia moment or a celebration of a decorated past. McGuinness’ perspective is more personal. “Really felt that was the case then because of where I previously worked, that was the mentality, you know,” McGuinness said.

“But, it is different. It is different now knowing that this is the end of my career versus when I was a wrestler, you know?” McGuinness said. “Then I was always looking the next step, the next step, the next step, and now it’s just appreciating it.”
That sense of appreciation has become central to his return. McGuinness is not describing a conventional full-time restart built around chasing the next career milestone. He is describing an opportunity to be present in moments that once appeared to be lost to him. Whether it is entering an AEW ring, receiving a crowd response, or walking out at Wembley Stadium, the value comes from being able to experience it at all.
Wembley Stadium Gives the Moment Added Meaning
Wembley has become the defining backdrop for McGuinness’ AEW return. His first match back occurred there during the 2024 edition of All In, and the emotions of that entrance stayed with him. McGuinness described walking to the ring for that comeback as surreal.
That reaction is understandable given the circumstances. A first match after more than a decade would be meaningful in any building. McGuinness specifically credited AEW President Tony Khan for opening the door to his in-ring comeback. He identified the 2024 Casino Gauntlet at Wembley as the opportunity that began this new stage of his relationship with wrestling.
“Tony [Khan] was good enough to give me the opportunity the first time we did Wembley in the Casino Gauntlet match, and, and then it’s just sort of built from there,” McGuinness said. “Every time I get out, I realize what a blessing it is, you know?”
The phrase “built from there” captures the unexpected nature of McGuinness’ current run. The Casino Gauntlet was the starting point, but it led to further opportunities rather than serving solely as a farewell appearance. McGuinness has remained conscious that none of it was guaranteed, which is why he continues to speak of his return in terms of gratitude rather than expectation.
He also said Khan’s confidence in him has been important. McGuinness sees that confidence as respect for his ability to perform, not merely recognition of what he accomplished earlier in his career.
“From Tony Khan himself, you know, to have the respect for me as an in-ring competitor and to give me the opportunity, it’s been great in that regard,” McGuinness said.
That respect is evidently meaningful to McGuinness because it validates the difficult path back to competition. A return after such a long gap involves more than simply receiving an invitation. It requires trust that a performer can step into a major AEW setting and contribute at the required level. McGuinness’ comments make clear that he values Khan’s willingness to give him that trust.
Appreciating Every Opportunity
McGuinness’ reflections offer a clear explanation for the emotion attached to his recent matches. He is not looking at them through the same lens he used earlier in his career, when the future seemed to stretch ahead and every achievement could lead immediately to another. He now understands that an in-ring career has an endpoint, and that knowledge has made the present more meaningful.
There is also a lesson in the way McGuinness has addressed fan calls for “one more match.” Those calls can become routine in wrestling, particularly when a respected veteran has been absent for years. But for McGuinness, they once represented an idea he could not imagine becoming real. His answer was that the ship had sailed. His current position at AEW All In shows that wrestling can still produce outcomes that even the people most directly involved never expected.

For McGuinness, the defining feeling is gratitude.
