Matt Hardy believes TNA has provided the right environment for both himself and Jeff Hardy at this stage of their careers, but he is not closing the door on any possible future in All Elite Wrestling.

Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Matt addressed the contrast between the Hardys’ current TNA run and the period that saw the legendary team working together in AEW. The brothers arrived in AEW with substantial expectations attached to them, given their history as one of wrestling’s most influential tag teams and the depth of potential opponents available to them. Those expectations, however, did not ultimately develop into the kind of sustained momentum many viewers anticipated.

Matt openly acknowledged that the brothers experienced frustrations during their AEW tenure. He also said that TNA has helped restore an enthusiasm for professional wrestling that is particularly meaningful as both men continue navigating the later stages of their in-ring careers.

“Jeff and I had some frustrations while in AEW, you know, it’s just – right now TNA is a much better fit for us,” Matt said on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy.

The comment offers a candid look at a run that once appeared to carry enormous upside. Jeff Hardy joined AEW in 2022, reuniting with Matt after years in separate promotions and following their earlier success as a team in WWE, TNA, ROH, and beyond. The prospect of the Hardys functioning as a major AEW tag team immediately sparked discussion about championship opportunities and marquee programs.

Among the matchups fans envisioned was another chapter in the long-running history shared by Matt and Jeff with Adam Copeland and Christian Cage. The four men have been connected for decades through landmark tag team rivalries, particularly during the era in which the Hardys, Edge and Christian, and The Dudley Boyz helped reshape expectations for tag team wrestling. With Copeland and Cage eventually both landing in AEW, the ingredients for a major reunion program existed, even if that particular direction never materialized as a defining Hardy Brothers story in the company.

Momentum That Never Fully Returned

Matt pointed to the impact of Jeff’s 2022 arrest and subsequent suspension as a major turning point. The interruption came at a difficult time for the act, as the Hardys had only recently reunited on AEW television and were still attempting to establish a consistent place in a crowded roster. In Matt’s view, the loss of momentum was significant enough that the team did not fully recover from it during the rest of their stay.

That assessment does not erase the accomplishments or visibility the brothers had during the period, but it explains why Matt views their current circumstances differently. A tag team with the Hardys’ legacy is often judged against unusually high expectations. They were not simply another tandem entering a division; they were performers whose past work helped make ladder matches, TLC bouts, and high-risk tag team wrestling central attractions in major promotions.

By June 2024, both Hardy brothers had departed AEW. Their eventual move back into the TNA landscape created an opportunity to present themselves in a setting that has long been familiar to them. Matt and Jeff each have extensive histories with TNA, both as singles performers and as a team, and the promotion has played an important role during several chapters of their careers.

For Matt, the key difference is not framed as an attack on AEW. Rather, it is about where he and Jeff currently feel most comfortable, useful, and energized. He said their TNA work has rejuvenated their connection to wrestling, an important statement from a performer who has spent decades adapting to changing locker rooms, audiences, styles, and business models.

Matt Hardy Still Sees Value in AEW

Despite describing TNA as the better fit, Matt did not present AEW as a place he and Jeff would permanently reject. He invoked one of professional wrestling’s most enduring lessons: circumstances can change rapidly, and declarations that someone will never return to a company often do not survive the unpredictable nature of the industry.

“That’s one thing I have truly learned in pro wrestling,” Matt said on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy. “You never know where you’re gonna end up. Don’t ever say ‘I’m never going to do this because,’ because you’ll end up being a hypocrite.”

That outlook is consistent with the careers of both Hardys. Matt and Jeff have moved between major companies, independent dates, singles roles, tag team presentations, and outside creative projects. Their journeys have included returns that once would have seemed unlikely, reinventions that altered their on-screen identities, and reunions that brought them back to the partnership most associated with their names.

Matt also made clear that he wants AEW to remain part of the wrestling business. He characterized the company as important to the industry and credited its arrival with helping create a stronger competitive climate at a point when he felt WWE had become stale.

His perspective recognizes AEW’s broader significance beyond his own experience there. The company’s presence has created another major platform for wrestlers, production staff, and wrestling fans while contributing to a marketplace with more high-profile options. Matt’s comments suggest that personal frustrations do not prevent him from seeing the promotion’s value on an industry-wide level.

He also believes AEW helped push WWE to raise its own standards. Competition has historically been a major force in professional wrestling, whether through territorial rivalries, competing national promotions, or the battle for talent and viewers. Matt’s remarks place AEW within that tradition: a company that has mattered not only for its own programming but also for the pressure and alternatives it has brought to the larger business.

No Retirement Timetable for Matt Hardy

The conversation also turned toward retirement, a topic Matt has begun to consider more seriously even though he does not intend to establish a firm end date. At this point, he is taking a personal, physical approach rather than operating from a predetermined schedule.

“You never know where the twists and turns of life is going to take you, but yes I do feel like I’m not putting any kind of bookend on my wrestling career now, I’m not putting [it] on any timetable, I’m just going by how I feel,” Matt said on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy.

For a wrestler with his mileage, that approach is understandable. Matt has been involved in physically punishing matches across multiple eras, while also expanding his work into creative development, character work, and media. He said he currently feels good and intends to continue doing what he loves for as long as that remains the case.

Matt’s possible eventual transition appears likely to remain within wrestling. He described himself as a lifer in the business and said he can see a future in a backstage role, where he could help younger talent and give back to an industry that has defined most of his professional life. Such a role would be a natural continuation for someone whose career has involved not only performing but also constructing characters, thinking about presentation, and finding new ways to connect with audiences.

Jeff, meanwhile, appears to be increasingly interested in expanding his musical pursuits. Matt noted that Jeff enjoyed a successful appearance at the Louder Than Life festival and has been working toward a greater transition into music. Matt also said Jeff has been slowing down his in-ring schedule as he invests more of his energy in that side of his career.

The two paths do not necessarily mean the end of the Hardys as a team, but they reflect the individual priorities of two performers who have shared much of their professional lives. Their partnership remains central to their legacy, yet each brother has always maintained interests and ambitions outside the tag team structure.

TNA’s Current Role in the Hardy Brothers’ Story

For now, TNA is where Matt believes the Hardys are best positioned. The promotion gives them a familiar home, a setting in which their history carries real weight, and a chance to continue performing without pretending that the challenges of their long careers do not exist. The brothers’ return is also meaningful for TNA, which has repeatedly benefited from their star power and their ability to connect different generations of fans.

Matt’s comments leave room for the future to unfold in any number of directions. He did not rule out AEW, did not announce retirement, and did not establish a final date for the Hardys’ run together. Instead, he emphasized the reality that has guided many of wrestling’s most surprising comebacks and career turns: no destination is ever completely impossible.

At present, though, his message is straightforward. TNA has renewed the brothers’ enthusiasm, AEW still has an important place in wrestling, and Matt Hardy intends to keep wrestling while his body and motivation tell him it is time to continue.
