Mason Rook has moved one step closer to the WWE NXT Championship after scoring the decisive victory in a six-man tag team match on Tuesday’s WWE NXT. Rook teamed with Saquon Shugars and former NXT Champion Tony D’Angelo against EK Prosper, Keanu Carver and Cruz Montana, with the winning side earning places in next week’s number one contender’s triple threat match.
Rook’s pinfall over Prosper made the upcoming championship eliminator official. Rook, Shugars and D’Angelo will now face one another next week, and the winner will advance to challenge NXT Champion Grayson Waller.
The result gives all three victorious teammates a direct route toward Waller’s title, but it also immediately changes their relationship. For much of the six-man match, Rook, Shugars and D’Angelo were able to work effectively as a unit. That cooperation was necessary to overcome the opposing trio, yet the stipulation ensured that the alliance would only last until the bell. The same three men who earned the opportunity together will now have to eliminate one another from the championship picture.
A chaotic six-man opening
The match began with all six competitors entering the ring at once before the action settled into a more conventional tag-team format. Shugars and Prosper were the first legal men to establish control, with Shugars looking to apply a submission. Carver quickly interrupted that attempt, dropping Shugars to the canvas and sending him across the ring with a powerful shoulder tackle.

Carver’s intervention established the physical threat posed by his side early in the contest. The match did not remain focused on one pairing for long, however. Rook soon had a brief exchange with Cruz Montana, then brought D’Angelo into the match. Montana answered with a double cutter that took down both Rook and D’Angelo, creating an early momentum swing for Prosper, Carver and Montana.
From there, the contest became a rapid series of tags and counters. Each side used frequent substitutions to keep pressure on the opposition, and each team demonstrated enough coordination to suggest that every participant understood the stakes. A victory did not simply mean a six-man tag win; it meant access to next week’s three-way match and the chance to become Grayson Waller’s next challenger.
That condition gave every sequence greater importance. Rook, Shugars and D’Angelo were fighting alongside men they will soon need to beat. Prosper, Carver and Montana were likewise attempting to secure their own group’s place in the contender’s match. Despite that looming individual prize, both trios were able to function cohesively for extended stretches.
Prosper, Carver and Montana build momentum
The opposing team found several openings during the middle portion of the match. Carver and Montana isolated Rook in their corner and connected with a second-rope superplex. The move kept Rook under sustained pressure and gave their team a chance to control the pace.
Prosper then used Rook as a launching point, jumping from Rook’s back in an effort to take out members of the other team. Even with the action breaking down around him, Rook was able to create enough separation to reach D’Angelo for the tag.
D’Angelo entered with urgency and immediately changed the direction of the bout. The former NXT Champion took down both Prosper and Carver, cutting through the momentum that had been built by the opposing side. His arrival also brought added championship experience to Rook and Shugars’ team at a pivotal moment.
When the ring cleared to leave Prosper and D’Angelo in position to fight, Prosper climbed to the top rope in search of a high-risk attack. D’Angelo stopped him with a spear and followed up with Dead to Rights. It appeared that D’Angelo had placed his team in position to finish the match and potentially claim much of the credit for earning the contender’s opportunity.
Rook had other ideas.
Rook takes the deciding opening
Rook tagged himself into the match before any disagreement between teammates could fully develop. He then made the boldest move of the night, placing D’Angelo on his own back and driving into Prosper in the corner with a backpack cannonball. Rook covered Prosper and got the three-count.
The pinfall belonged to Rook, and it was Rook’s opportunistic finishing sequence that formally secured the triple threat field. The moment was effective because it came directly after D’Angelo had delivered the spear and Dead to Rights. Rather than allowing the former champion to complete the victory, Rook inserted himself into the final exchange and capitalized on the opening.
That does not take away from the effort supplied by Shugars and D’Angelo throughout the match. Shugars was involved from the start and endured the impact of Carver’s offense. D’Angelo supplied the late surge that swung the match away from Prosper, Carver and Montana. But Rook delivered the deciding pin, giving him clear momentum as the three men head toward next week’s showdown.
It also leaves a natural point of tension within the winning group. D’Angelo had Prosper down after Dead to Rights, only for Rook to tag in and take over the closing sequence. In a standard tag match, that type of urgency might simply be viewed as a teammate doing whatever was necessary to win. With an NXT Championship opportunity awaiting only one of them next week, it carries added meaning.
Three paths toward Grayson Waller
Next week’s triple threat will determine the next challenger for Grayson Waller’s NXT Championship. Rook enters after pinning Prosper in the qualifying six-man encounter. D’Angelo enters as a former NXT Champion who was central to his team’s comeback. Shugars enters having earned his place on the winning side as well, with the upcoming match giving him a chance to turn a shared victory into an individual title opportunity.
The format will remove the protection and cooperation that defined Tuesday’s match. There will be no partner to tag, no teammate to recover while another competitor absorbs punishment, and no shared objective beyond the opening bell. Rook, Shugars and D’Angelo may have reached the same destination, but they will arrive with separate motivations and separate claims to being the most deserving challenger.
For Rook, the win provides the most immediate momentum. He was the man who scored the fall, and his backpack cannonball on Prosper was the final image of the match. Winning another high-stakes encounter next week would put him in position for the biggest match of his NXT run: a championship bout with Waller.
D’Angelo’s case is grounded in both experience and performance. As a former NXT Champion, he knows the demands of competing at the top of the brand. He also appeared to have the six-man match won after his spear and Dead to Rights combination on Prosper. His inability to finish the pinfall may become a key detail when he faces Rook directly, particularly after Rook used D’Angelo as part of the attack that set up the decisive cover.
Shugars, meanwhile, has an opportunity to emerge from a field that includes the proven D’Angelo and the surging Rook. The six-man tag showed that he could contribute in a fast-moving, crowded match where momentum shifted repeatedly. The triple threat will present a different challenge, as Shugars must navigate two opponents who will both be focused on reaching Waller.
The championship picture takes shape
Tuesday’s result narrowed the NXT Championship contender picture to three men. Prosper, Carver and Montana fell short despite their stretches of control, including the superplex on Rook and the pressure applied during the match’s middle stages. Their loss means Rook, Shugars and D’Angelo move forward instead.
Waller will now wait to see which of the three can survive next week’s triple threat. The champion’s next opponent will be determined by competitors with very different recent roles in the qualification match: Rook as the winner, D’Angelo as the experienced former champion whose offense created the finishing opportunity, and Shugars as the third member of the successful team.
Rook earned the right to be part of that conversation with a decisive pinfall. The larger prize, however, remains just out of reach. Next week, the partnerships end, the triple threat begins, and one man will emerge as Grayson Waller’s next NXT Championship challenger.
