Mason Rook has not spent long in WWE NXT, but the English standout is already thinking about the kind of challenge that could define his rise through the company. With an NXT Championship match against Grayson Waller coming up next week, Rook has identified GUNTHER as the main-roster name he would most like to face on a stage as large as WrestleMania.
Rook made his NXT debut in April and has quickly positioned himself among the brand's most closely watched newer talents. His rapid progression has now brought him to a title opportunity against Waller, the reigning NXT Champion. While that immediate championship pursuit is his priority, Rook made clear that a collision with GUNTHER stands out as a long-term goal.
“There's a few [I would like to face on the main roster]. I'd say GUNTHER, right now. For me, he is the standard of wrestling,” Rook said.
For Rook, the appeal is about more than simply sharing a ring with one of WWE's most imposing competitors. He pointed to GUNTHER's reputation, his influence across the independent wrestling landscape, and a physical approach that Rook believes connects with his own European background.

Rook Sees GUNTHER as the Benchmark
GUNTHER has built his WWE identity around a punishing, deliberate in-ring style and the expectation that opponents will be pushed to their limits whenever they stand across from him. That reputation is central to why Rook wants the match. Rather than looking for an easier path to a marquee opponent, Rook sees facing GUNTHER as the ultimate measuring stick for a wrestler who wants to establish himself at the highest level.
“I feel like he was the trailblazer on the Indies. Wherever he's gone, he's set the standard. And coming from Europe as well, I feel like we have the same kind of physical style,” Rook said.
The comparison is significant because Rook is not presenting the potential match as a clash built only around personality or spectacle. He is framing it as a test between two wrestlers who value physicality and who share a connection to the European wrestling scene. GUNTHER's body of work before arriving in WWE has helped form the perception of him as a standard-bearer for that hard-hitting approach, and Rook believes competing against him could reveal where he stands in that tradition.
GUNTHER's current presentation adds another layer to the prospect. Rook referenced the “career ender” moniker attached to GUNTHER and the fact that he has retired some of wrestling's greatest names. That history makes the possible meeting feel especially daunting, but it is also precisely what makes it attractive to a performer who is still building his WWE résumé.
“Obviously, he's now got this moniker as the career ender. He's retired some of the greatest to ever do it, so to be able to test myself against GUNTHER this early on, I feel like would do wonders for my career here at WWE,” Rook said.
Those comments underline Rook's ambition. A WrestleMania showdown with GUNTHER would be a major step for any rising NXT talent, and it would carry particular weight for someone whose WWE run is still in its early stages. Rook is not suggesting that such a match is imminent; he has substantial business ahead of him in NXT. Still, he has offered a clear picture of the level of opposition he intends to pursue if and when he reaches WWE's main roster.
An NXT Championship Test Comes First
Before any main-roster aspirations can become a reality, Rook has an immediate chance to make his strongest statement yet. He will challenge Grayson Waller for the NXT Championship on next week's episode of NXT. It is his first opportunity to win silverware on the brand, and the outcome could have a major impact on the direction of his ascent.
Waller represents a very different type of challenge from the one Rook described in GUNTHER. The NXT Champion is the obstacle directly in front of him, and Rook must navigate that title match before looking too far down the road. A victory would immediately establish him as a champion on WWE's developmental brand. Even without a title win, a strong performance against Waller would provide another important indication of how quickly Rook is adapting to the environment.
The timing of the match also matters. Rook's debut came only months ago, making an NXT Championship opportunity a notable sign of momentum. WWE NXT has long been a place where performers are tested in high-profile situations before taking the next step, and title matches are often a critical part of that process. Rook now has a chance to show that the attention surrounding his arrival is justified.
Early Praise Has Followed Rook's WWE Arrival
Rook's growing profile has not been limited to his own confidence or his place in the NXT title picture. He has already drawn encouraging assessments from prominent names within wrestling. John Cena has recognized Rook's talent, including before Rook made the move to WWE. That type of endorsement is notable for a performer still at an early point in his run on a nationally visible WWE platform.
Former WWE Champion Jinder Mahal has also spoken highly of Rook, saying that he possesses the “it” factor and has a recognizable character. In a crowded WWE system where establishing an immediate identity can be as important as in-ring ability, those qualities could prove especially valuable. Rook's route toward larger opportunities will depend on his performances, but early recognition from established figures adds to the sense that he has captured attention quickly.
There is, of course, a considerable distance between being a promising NXT contender and standing opposite GUNTHER at WrestleMania. Rook's comments do not change that reality. They do, however, show a willingness to identify the most demanding possible opponent and explain why that match means something beyond its profile.
Rook is looking at GUNTHER as a wrestler whose standard has been forged through consistency, physicality, and the ability to make major matches feel consequential. For a 29-year-old performer working to make his mark in WWE, that is the kind of benchmark worth chasing.
What a GUNTHER Match Would Mean
A future Rook-GUNTHER encounter would naturally center on whether the NXT prospect could withstand the intensity that has defined GUNTHER's career. Rook himself has already explained the stakes in simple terms: the match would test him. That is the core of the appeal, and it gives the potential WrestleMania contest a logical foundation if Rook continues to develop and earns a place on the main roster.
For now, though, his next defining test is Waller and the NXT Championship. Rook has an opportunity to convert early momentum into his first WWE title. If he can do that, discussion of bigger stages and bigger opponents will only become louder.
GUNTHER may be the name Rook has circled as his ideal major opponent, but Grayson Waller is the champion standing in his way at present. The next week will determine whether Rook can take the first piece of silverware in what he hopes will become a rapid climb toward WWE's biggest stage.
