Kevin Knight has offered his clearest explanation yet for aligning himself with Don Callis, framing the controversial AEW partnership as a calculated decision designed to take his career from championship success to the very top of the company.
Knight’s association with Callis was not universally celebrated when it began earlier this year. Callis has built a reputation as one of AEW’s most divisive figures, and joining the Don Callis Family has often meant accepting that scrutiny alongside the perceived benefits of the group’s guidance. For Knight, however, the equation is straightforward: Callis has a proven history of identifying major talent, establishing a plan, and putting performers in position to thrive.
Speaking about the relationship, Knight compared Callis to some of the most decorated strategic minds in sports. The TNT Champion called him “the Bill Belichick of pro wrestling,” while also invoking the names of Nick Saban and Phil Jackson to explain what he believes Callis brings to a wrestler’s career.
Knight Says Callis Had Been Watching From the Beginning
Knight said his current place beside Callis did not emerge suddenly. In his view, Callis had been aware of him from the earliest stage of his AEW run, including an occasion when Callis approached Knight and “Speedball” Mike Bailey with an offer to join the group.

At that time, Knight and Bailey opted not to take it. Knight said they wanted to make their own way rather than immediately attach themselves to Callis and his Family. That choice reflected a desire for independence, but it did not end Callis’ interest in Knight.
“Honestly, I think Don Callis was looking at me since day one, since I got to AEW,” Knight said. “You can go back to one of my first few matches, he came up to me and Speedball offering a spot. We turned them down because we wanted to do things in our own.”
The eventual shift in Knight’s thinking came as he assessed the wider AEW landscape and the accomplishments attached to Callis’ orbit. Knight’s comments make clear that he sees the Family not simply as an alliance built around controversy, but as an avenue to compete with the promotion’s biggest names and pursue its biggest prizes.
A Record Knight Believes Speaks for Itself
In explaining why he reconsidered Callis’ offer, Knight cited the high-level performers connected to the Don Callis Family. He pointed to Kazuchika Okada, Kenny Omega, Will Ospreay and Kyle Fletcher as examples of wrestlers whose careers have intersected with Callis’ influence.
Knight specifically referenced Okada being taken “to the highest heights,” while also naming Omega and Ospreay among the standout talents who have gone through Callis’ group. Ospreay has at times pushed back against the degree to which Callis should receive credit for his success, but Knight nevertheless included him in the Family’s broader record.
Fletcher’s rise was especially relevant to Knight’s assessment. Knight said Fletcher’s ascent throughout the previous year demonstrated the kind of progress that can be made within Callis’ camp. Now working in partnership with Fletcher himself, Knight sees that track record as evidence that his own upward movement can continue.
“But, as we see the landscape of pro wrestling at AEW, the GOATs all go through the Don Callis Family,” Knight said. “We’ve seen them take Okada to the highest heights, Kenny Omega, Ospreay as much as he tries to deny it. Kyle Fletcher, you saw his rise all through last year. Now, you see this year, I’ve had my rise.”
That last point is central to Knight’s defense of the partnership. The alignment is taking place while he is already holding the TNT Championship, not while he is trying to escape the lower reaches of the card. Knight has continued his title reign over the summer and also shared a pay-per-view main event with Omega, two developments that have made the questions surrounding his ceiling increasingly significant.
The TNT Championship Is Not Knight’s Final Goal
Knight is already a champion, but he made clear that the TNT title is not the end point of his ambitions. He wants to become “Jet Two Belts,” a goal that would require adding the AEW World Championship to his current title. That objective explains why he has embraced the protection and planning that he believes Callis can provide.
In wrestling, alliances frequently carry risk. A manager may offer opportunity while also making a wrestler more vulnerable to personal agendas, rivalries and the consequences of the group’s actions. Knight acknowledged the need for protection indirectly when discussing why he chose to invest in himself after winning the TNT Championship. For him, Callis represents an experienced operator who can help him navigate the pressure that accompanies being a titleholder with world-title aspirations.
“Once I won the TNT title, I had dreams of being Jet Two Belts and getting that AEW World Championship so I invested in myself to get some protection,” Knight said.
The phrase “Jet Two Belts” neatly captures the scope of Knight’s vision. The TNT Championship establishes him as one of AEW’s leading champions, but the AEW World Championship would place him at the center of the company. Knight is not presenting his Callis alliance as a retreat from confidence in his own ability. Instead, he is portraying it as a strategic enhancement of an already rising career.
Why the Belichick Comparison Matters
Comparing Callis to Bill Belichick is a notable endorsement, particularly because the comparison centers on preparation, structure and winning rather than popularity. Belichick’s legacy in football is tied to detailed game planning and a sustained ability to build championship teams. Knight sees similar value in Callis’ capacity to assess talent and create the right route forward.
The additional references to Saban and Jackson reinforce the point. Both coaches are associated with demanding standards, championship-level preparation and bringing together talent capable of succeeding on major stages. Knight believes Callis holds a comparable role in professional wrestling: someone who can draw up the plan while the athlete executes it.
“Don Callis, he knows how to get you to the promised land,” Knight said. “He’s like Nick Sabin, he’s like Phil Jackson, he’s the Bill Belichick of pro wrestling. He’s going to draw the plan and get you where you need to go.”
It is a description that places a considerable amount of faith in Callis, whose history with elite wrestlers is often accompanied by strong opinions from fans and rivals alike. Yet Knight appears comfortable with that reaction. The criticism that followed his decision to align with Callis has been answered, at least in Knight’s eyes, by what he accomplished over the summer: retaining his standing as TNT Champion and competing at a pay-per-view main-event level with Omega.
Kyle Fletcher Partnership Adds Another Layer
Knight also discussed his current partnership with Fletcher, another significant component of his present AEW direction. Fletcher is not merely a name Knight used to support his argument about Callis’ influence; he is now an active ally in Knight’s orbit. Their association adds another layer to Knight’s belief that surrounding himself with people who have shared ambitions can accelerate his pursuit of greater success.
The partnership also puts Knight closer to a wrestler he views as an example of meaningful advancement under the Don Callis Family banner. Whether that connection leads to more opportunities, more championship pursuits or greater conflict elsewhere in AEW remains to be seen. What is clear is that Knight does not view his relationship with Callis as a temporary convenience.
He sees it as a deliberate move made at a pivotal stage of his career. Knight has the TNT Championship, a growing résumé of major-match experience and a stated desire to capture the AEW World Championship. By his own account, Callis is the strategist he trusts to help convert those ambitions into reality.
For now, Knight’s message is direct: he believes the Don Callis Family is where top-level wrestlers go when they are serious about reaching the promised land. As “The Jet” continues to chase a second title, he is betting that Callis’ blueprint will prove as valuable as his own athletic ability.
