Former WWE Divas Champion Kelly Kelly has opened up about a major opportunity she chose not to pursue during her time with the company.
Speaking with former WWE colleague Layla El on the LayTalk Podcast with Layla El, Kelly Kelly recalled being approached about modeling for Playboy while she was still early in her career. Although the offer represented a high-profile crossover opportunity beyond wrestling, she said her thoughts quickly turned toward the long-term consequences of having those images available publicly.
Kelly Kelly, whose real name is Barbie Blank, entered WWE at a young age and became one of the more recognizable personalities of the Divas era. Her WWE presentation often placed her in storylines built around the company’s then-prevailing approach to women’s wrestling and entertainment. Still, when the possibility of posing for Playboy arose, she said she felt compelled to take a step back and consider how the decision could affect the life she hoped to build outside of the ring.
“Well, I remember them asking me to do it, and I remember I was like, ‘Oh, well, I have to talk to my family,’ because I was literally 21,” Kelly Kelly said.

Her age was a crucial part of the decision. At 21, she was navigating the demands of a national wrestling platform while also weighing an opportunity that could have left a permanent digital footprint. Rather than viewing the offer solely through the lens of exposure or career advancement, she considered what it could mean years later.
“I just remember in the back of my head being like, you know, if I do this, it’s going to haunt me for the rest of my life. Like, these pictures are never going to go away... I know I want to have kids. I don’t want to have that on the internet.”
Kelly Kelly said she discussed the situation with her family, who supported her regardless of the direction she chose. That support gave her room to make her own decision, but she ultimately stayed with her initial instinct and declined the proposal. Looking back, she expressed happiness with that choice.
The story offers a personal look at a period in WWE history when the company’s women performers often encountered opportunities that blended wrestling, modeling and mainstream pop-culture visibility. WWE had a longstanding association with Playboy across different eras, with several performers appearing in the magazine or being involved in related television storylines. For Kelly Kelly, however, the possibility was not one she felt suited her future.
A Career That Continued to Grow in WWE
Declining the offer did not slow Kelly Kelly’s progression as an on-screen WWE performer. She continued developing her in-ring work and remained a regular presence on WWE programming. Her persistence eventually led to the defining championship accomplishment of her original WWE tenure.
In June 2011, Kelly Kelly defeated Brie Bella at WWE Raw: Power to the People to win the Divas Championship. The victory marked the first and only Divas title reign of her career, and it came at a time when she had become one of the division’s leading babyfaces.
That championship win also served as an important payoff in her evolution from a young performer introduced during the mid-2000s to an established figure on the WWE roster. Kelly Kelly had debuted on WWE television in 2006 and experienced a variety of roles, brands and storyline directions before receiving her major singles title opportunity.
Her reign lasted 104 days. Beth Phoenix defeated Kelly Kelly for the Divas Championship at Hell in a Cell 2011, ending the run. Phoenix, like Brie Bella, is a WWE Hall of Famer, placing Kelly Kelly’s championship story alongside two major names from the era.
While the title reign was relatively brief in the broader context of WWE history, it remains central to how Kelly Kelly’s time in the company is remembered. She had entered WWE with limited wrestling experience, then continued to refine her craft in a system where women’s divisions were frequently judged through multiple expectations at once: character work, appearance, promotional obligations and in-ring performance.
Considering the Long-Term Impact
Kelly Kelly’s recollection was not framed as criticism of anyone who made a different choice. Instead, she described a decision specific to her own comfort level and the future she envisioned. Her comments centered on the permanence of online images and the fact that she already knew she wanted to have children one day.
That perspective is particularly notable because professional wrestlers often make career choices in public, under intense time pressure and while working in industries that can change rapidly. Outside opportunities may offer a bigger platform, additional income or mainstream recognition, but they can also carry personal implications that outlast a particular television run or contract.
For Kelly Kelly, the question was not merely whether the offer could help her profile at that moment. It was whether she would remain comfortable with it later in life. In her view, the answer was no, and the certainty of that feeling led her to turn it down.
Her family’s reaction also played a meaningful role in the story. Rather than describing pressure from relatives to accept or reject the offer, Kelly Kelly said they gave her their support either way. That enabled her to prioritize her own values rather than make the choice based on someone else’s expectations.
The result was a decision she now says she is glad she made. She remained focused on wrestling, and her WWE career ultimately included the Divas Championship, high-profile appearances and a lasting association with a distinctive period in the company’s women’s division.
Life After Her Initial WWE Departure
Kelly Kelly departed WWE in 2012, but that was not the end of her connection with the company. She has returned for several appearances in the years since leaving as a full-time talent, keeping her visible to fans who followed her original run as well as viewers who discovered her later.
Those returns have reinforced her standing as a familiar WWE personality from the 2000s and early 2010s. They have also offered a reminder that careers in wrestling are not always defined strictly by the date of a departure. Former stars can remain part of the company’s history and re-emerge for special events, reunions, commemorative programming or in-ring opportunities.
Kelly Kelly’s continued appearances are especially meaningful given how young she was when she first reached WWE television. The former Divas Champion has now had the opportunity to reflect on decisions made at the beginning of adulthood with the added perspective that comes from years removed from her initial rise.
Her comments on the LayTalk Podcast with Layla El show that the Playboy decision was one of those moments she considered carefully even while her wrestling career was still taking shape. She did not portray it as a difficult decision because her family opposed it; instead, it became difficult because she understood the offer could have a lasting effect and wanted to make a choice she could live with well beyond her WWE tenure.
Ultimately, Kelly Kelly chose the path that aligned with her personal boundaries and future plans. She went on to win the Divas Championship, held the title for 104 days, and has continued to make WWE appearances after her 2012 departure. More than a decade later, she remains confident that saying no to the opportunity was the right move for her.
