Kelani Jordan remains WWE NXT Women’s Champion after turning back the challenge of returning Paige in a surprise title defense on the special Wednesday edition of WWE NXT.
The matchup came together following Jordan’s successful championship defense against Wren Sinclair at Halloween Havoc. After that victory, NXT General Manager Robert Stone informed Jordan backstage that another title match was waiting for her on the weekly program. The identity of the challenger was initially left unknown, making Paige’s arrival a significant surprise for the champion and the NXT audience.
Paige immediately presented a very different test from the one Jordan had faced at Halloween Havoc. Jordan entered the contest with the championship, recent momentum and the athletic edge that has become central to her in-ring approach. Paige, however, brought a more physical and opportunistic style to the match, repeatedly looking to disrupt Jordan’s rhythm and capitalize whenever the titleholder left an opening.
Paige Makes an Immediate Impact
Jordan was able to take Paige down early, but she could not sustain control for long. Paige quickly fought back to her feet and swung the momentum in her favor by driving Jordan’s face into the turnbuckle pads. The challenger continued to press the advantage beyond the ropes, where she dropped Jordan on the outside with a cannonball.

That sequence put the champion in a difficult position. Paige’s ability to force the match outside the ring and dictate a more punishing pace limited Jordan’s opportunities to build the kind of sustained offense needed to set up her biggest aerial attacks. Rather than allowing the challenger to keep the match centered on raw physicality, Jordan began looking for a more focused route back into contention.
Jordan targeted Paige’s neck as the bout developed. The champion’s approach was strategic as well as aggressive: If Paige’s neck was compromised, it could weaken the challenger’s ability to execute her offense and potentially create an opening for Jordan to apply a submission. It also gave Jordan a way to slow an opponent who had successfully prevented her from gaining extended momentum.
The adjustment did not immediately end Paige’s threat. Jordan climbed to the top rope in search of a 450 Splash, hoping to use her high-flying ability to put the challenger away. Paige moved out of danger before the champion could connect, though, and the missed attempt created one of the match’s biggest turning points.
The Champion Escapes the Rampage
With Jordan vulnerable, Paige capitalized. She caught the NXT Women’s Champion with a superkick and then delivered the Rampage. It appeared to be the decisive sequence Paige needed to complete the upset, but Jordan kicked out.
That near fall underscored how close Paige came to leaving the special Wednesday edition of NXT with the championship. Jordan had already absorbed punishment at ringside and had seen her 450 Splash attempt backfire. Escaping the Rampage allowed her to remain in the match, but Paige had shown that the champion could be taken to the brink by a returning challenger with no shortage of confidence or urgency.
Jordan answered by returning to the strategy that had offered her the clearest opening. She applied a crossface in the middle of the ring, again putting attention on Paige’s neck. The hold forced Paige to fight from a compromised position and gave Jordan a chance to reassert control after surviving the challenger’s signature offense.
Paige broke free, but Jordan kept the pressure on with a DDT. Even then, the challenger remained difficult to put away. Jordan went back toward her aerial game and attempted a split-legged moonsault, only for Paige to get her knees up and block the move.
The counter gave Paige another opening for the Rampage. This time, however, Jordan was ready for the attempt. Rather than allowing Paige to complete the move, Jordan rolled her up and scored the winning pinfall.
Jordan’s Resourcefulness Preserves the Championship
The finish was not the emphatic aerial victory Jordan may have preferred, but it was an important demonstration of resilience. Paige had repeatedly countered the champion’s biggest attacks, survived Jordan’s efforts to weaken her neck and came within moments of winning the title after landing the Rampage. Jordan nevertheless found a way to turn Paige’s final attempt into a pinning opportunity.
In championship matches, the ability to adapt can matter as much as executing a planned game plan. Jordan began the contest looking to use her speed and top-rope offense, but the match demanded something more. She had to withstand Paige’s physical attack, endure a major near fall and make an instant decision when Paige made one last push for her finishing move. The roll-up provided the answer.
Jordan’s reign therefore continues after another successful defense, following her Halloween Havoc win against Sinclair. The champion has now dealt with two very different challenges in short order: Sinclair in the Halloween Havoc defense, then Paige in an unexpected match arranged by Stone. The latter challenge was especially unpredictable because Jordan did not know who she would be facing until the mystery opponent was revealed.
That uncertainty added another layer to the title bout. A champion can prepare for a familiar rival or a scheduled opponent by studying tendencies and anticipating a preferred pace. Jordan instead had to adjust to Paige in real time. Paige’s return meant the challenger arrived with the element of surprise, and she nearly used that advantage to capture the NXT Women’s Championship.
What the Result Means for Paige
Although Paige did not win the title, her performance ensured that her return was not a quiet one. She took the reigning champion to the limit, landed the Rampage and countered two of Jordan’s key aerial efforts. The result was a loss on paper, but the match established Paige as a serious threat within the NXT women’s division.
Most importantly, Paige can point to how narrowly Jordan escaped. The challenger had the champion down after the Rampage and was later in position to attempt it again. The final exchange did not see Jordan overpower Paige or decisively neutralize the move; it saw Jordan seize a brief opportunity for a roll-up before Paige could finish her offense.
That leaves plenty of reason for Paige to believe she was close to winning the championship. At the same time, Jordan’s victory confirms that the champion is capable of surviving when a match does not unfold on her terms. Paige found answers for Jordan’s 450 Splash and split-legged moonsault, but Jordan found the final answer when it mattered most.
A Demanding Week for the NXT Women’s Champion
Jordan’s latest defense highlights the demands that come with holding a championship in NXT. Halloween Havoc had already required her to defeat Sinclair. Instead of receiving a lengthy period to celebrate or regroup, Jordan was told by Stone that she would face a mystery opponent on the weekly show. That opponent turned out to be Paige, and the challenge was every bit as serious as the circumstances suggested.
The victory also reinforces Jordan’s versatility. Her offense remains built around exceptional athleticism, but her win over Paige was rooted in more than a spectacular move from the top rope. Jordan attacked the neck, used the crossface to apply pressure and stayed alert enough to reverse Paige’s last Rampage attempt into the winning pin.
Paige’s return gave the special Wednesday edition of NXT a major championship surprise, while Jordan’s successful defense ensured that the title stays with its current holder. The challenger proved she can immediately compete at championship level. Jordan, meanwhile, added another hard-earned retention to her reign by surviving a match where a single mistake nearly changed the division’s landscape.
Kelani Jordan remains NXT Women’s Champion. Paige’s comeback fell just short, but the closing moments made clear how little separated the two competitors in a high-stakes and highly competitive title match.
