John Cena has spent a quarter-century accumulating stories from life on the road, from championship nights and global stadium events to the far less glamorous realities of delayed travel, hotel rooms and long stretches with nowhere to go. One of his more unforgettable travel tales came during a WWE trip to Ireland, where a volcanic disruption left the roster stranded and unable to make it back to the United States for Raw.

Speaking on What Now? with Trevor Noah, Cena recalled how the unexpected layover created the kind of situation that can only happen when a group of wrestlers are stuck overseas with their schedule abruptly cleared. The eventual result involved an intoxicated Hornswoggle, Christian Cage, room service, and a hamburger Cena believed had been left untouched in a hotel hallway.

It had not been left untouched.

WWE’s Ireland Delay Led To A Long Night

Cena explained that the group was unable to leave Ireland because of a volcano, leaving WWE talent without a way to return to the States in time for the next episode of Raw. With the roster suddenly idle and away from home, Cena said the night turned into an especially lively one.

“We got stuck in Ireland because there was a volcano and we couldn't get back to the states to perform [on] ‘[WWE] Raw.’ The last thing you want to do is leave us stuck someplace alone idle with nothing to do. Boy, we had a great night.”

Among those involved were Dylan Postl, better known to WWE fans as Hornswoggle, and Christian Cage, who was performing as Christian during that stage of his WWE career. Cena described both men as friends while relaying the story, which was told with the sort of good-natured embarrassment that tends to follow wrestlers long after a tour has ended.

Hornswoggle had ordered room service during the night. After becoming drunk, however, he became sick on his hamburger. Christian stepped in, got him settled into bed, and then took the room-service tray into the hotel hallway.

From Christian’s perspective, it was a straightforward cleanup decision. The food tray was out of the room, Hornswoggle was tucked in, and the night could move on. Unfortunately for Cena, the tray was still sitting outside hours later when he found himself hungry, heavily influenced, and with the hotel’s food service no longer available.

A Late-Night Meal Cena Would Soon Regret

Cena said that, in the moment, the hamburger appeared to be a lucky find. With no other options available after the kitchen had closed, he saw what looked like an untouched burger on the abandoned tray and decided to bring it into his own room.

“Flash forward to hours later, I am heavily influenced. Food is closed and there are no options available. I look and I'm like, ‘That burger is not even touched. I'm just gonna bring that inside.’ I ate the thing.”

The full reality of the situation did not become clear until the following morning. Cena said Christian and Hornswoggle informed him what had happened to the burger before it had been placed in the hallway. The meal Cena had viewed as a fortunate late-night discovery had, in fact, been caught up in Hornswoggle’s earlier room-service mishap.

The story drew its humor not only from the unfortunate ending but from the delayed timing of Cena’s discovery. In the moment, he had made what seemed like a practical decision: food was unavailable, a burger was sitting nearby, and it did not appear to have been eaten. By the next morning, the explanation from Christian and Hornswoggle gave the situation a very different meaning.

Cena was clearly able to laugh at the experience while recounting it. Still, the story also appears to have changed his approach to unattended hotel food. A hamburger left alone in a hallway may look harmless, but Cena now has one very specific reason to think twice before assuming it is safe to eat.

The Shared History Behind The Story

The Ireland anecdote is a reminder of the extensive overlap between Cena, Christian and Hornswoggle during WWE’s busy touring years. Cena was one of WWE’s defining stars throughout the era, carrying an enormous amount of the company’s visibility in arenas, television programming and international tours. Christian was a respected veteran with a long history in WWE, while Hornswoggle became one of the promotion’s most recognizable personalities through his comedic work and involvement in major storylines.

Travel disruptions have always been a major part of wrestling life, particularly for a promotion with an international schedule. Flights can be missed, weather can change plans, and a card built around a tightly managed television calendar can suddenly become complicated. A volcano preventing talent from returning in time for Raw was an unusually dramatic reason for a delay, but Cena’s retelling emphasized what happened once the performers realized they were not going anywhere soon.

Wrestlers regularly spend extended periods together in airports, hotels, rental cars and unfamiliar cities. Those conditions help create close friendships, but they also produce stories that would be nearly impossible to replicate in any other profession. Cena’s burger incident has the familiar ingredients of a classic locker-room travel story: an unexpected delay, late-night decisions, room-service food and a revelation that arrives a few hours too late.

It also showed the contrast between Cena’s carefully controlled public image and the often chaotic reality of touring. For all of the major championship moments, media appearances and global recognition attached to Cena’s career, there are still stories involving closed hotel kitchens and a questionable burger in a hallway. His willingness to tell the story in public reflects how comfortable he remains discussing the less polished side of life with WWE.

Cena’s Final Match Anniversary Is Approaching

The recollection arrives as WWE approaches another major point in Cena’s career timeline. December 13 will mark one year since Cena wrestled his final in-ring match, facing GUNTHER, “The Ring General,” at Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Cena’s final match represented the closing chapter of an in-ring career that stretched across 25 years. During that run, he became one of WWE’s central figures, delivering memorable rivalries, headline matches and championship reigns across multiple generations of fans. His longevity also meant that he accumulated an extraordinary number of travel memories, including the Ireland trip that led to the Hornswoggle hamburger story.

While Cena’s days as an active wrestler have ended, WWE has already announced the John Cena Classic tournament. The tournament appears set to become part of the company’s effort to honor Cena’s legacy in a format built around competition rather than simply looking back at archival highlights and farewell moments.

Current working plans have WWE targeting Saturday, December 12 for the inaugural John Cena Classic. That date has not been presented as final, so the details could still change as the event takes shape. Even so, the timing would place the tournament immediately before the one-year anniversary of Cena’s final match against GUNTHER.

A Career Defined By Major Moments And Unforgettable Road Tales

The John Cena Classic is expected to provide a new WWE platform tied to the name of one of the company’s most enduring stars. The tournament’s eventual format, participants and full presentation remain to be seen, but its placement around the anniversary of Cena’s retirement bout would make clear why WWE chose this particular period to launch it.

For Cena, the anniversary is likely to invite reflection on a career filled with historic matches and career-defining achievements. Yet it is stories like the one from Ireland that offer another perspective on his time in wrestling. Championships and main events define a legacy in public, while missed flights, stranded rosters and ill-advised hotel-hallway meals often become the stories performers remember most vividly among themselves.

In this case, Cena’s lesson was simple: a hamburger can look untouched without actually being untouched. And after learning what happened to that particular room-service meal, he has a very understandable reason to be cautious whenever he sees food sitting outside a hotel room.
