Big Cass’ return to WWE has quickly become one of the more curious stories surrounding NXT. After spending eight years away from the company, including runs in TNA and AEW, Cass reappeared in August and immediately entered a program with Je’Von Evans. The returning powerhouse spent several weeks targeting Evans before eventually making his in-ring return, seemingly positioning himself for a meaningful role in the brand’s singles landscape.

That momentum has not translated into a clear breakout direction so far. Cass has struggled to establish a major connection with the audience since coming back, and his surprising loss to Dragon Lee last week added another layer of uncertainty to his presentation. The defeat led to renewed discussion over whether WWE has settled on a concrete long-term plan for the former NXT standout.

There is now another wrinkle to the situation: Enzo Amore was reportedly at one point expected to return to NXT as well. The idea was not initially to immediately revive the partnership that made Enzo and Cass one of WWE’s most recognizable acts during their first run. Rather, the reported approach was to bring both men back while keeping them separate, allowing Cass to pursue a larger role on his own.

The reported reasoning behind keeping Enzo and Cass apart

The logic behind that strategy is straightforward. Enzo and Cass became popular as a tandem because of their chemistry, charisma and memorable entrance presentation. Enzo’s microphone work and Cass’ size created a natural contrast, and the pair developed a strong audience response in NXT before moving to WWE’s main roster. Reuniting them would instantly give viewers a familiar act to rally behind.

At the same time, a reunion would also put Cass back into a defined tag team role. For a wrestler of his size and physical profile, that could be viewed as limiting if the goal is to present him as an imposing singles attraction. WWE has often treated its tag divisions differently from its top singles programs, and the belief behind the reported plan was that Cass’ ceiling could be higher if he was not tied to a permanent partnership from the start.

Dave Meltzer has indicated that an Enzo return to NXT was viewed internally as close to happening. The expectation was reportedly that Enzo and Cass would be kept apart specifically because pairing them immediately could restrict Cass’ singles upside. That reported thinking makes sense in the context of Cass’ initial post-return booking, which placed him directly into an issue with Evans rather than into a tag team storyline.

However, the direction has become less certain after only a short period. Cass’ loss to Dragon Lee was notable because returning performers are commonly protected while WWE establishes their new role. A defeat is not automatically a sign that a push has ended or that plans have changed. Wrestling booking can turn on a single match, and losses can be used to set up rivalries, character shifts or future opportunities. Still, the result stood out given that Cass had only recently returned and was still trying to build momentum.

Cass’ position makes a reunion easier to consider

If WWE’s original objective was to make Cass feel like a viable singles presence, the early results have apparently not yet created that impression. His program with Evans gave him immediate television focus, but focus and audience investment are not always the same thing. A wrestler returning after an extended absence has to be reintroduced to fans who may not have followed every stage of his career, while also reminding longtime viewers why the act mattered in the first place.

That is where the Enzo question becomes more significant. If Cass is not being built around a major singles direction, a reunion with Enzo could offer a more clearly defined identity. Their shared history is obvious, their dynamic does not require much explanation, and their act was built around a presentation that could immediately distinguish them from other teams on the roster.

A tag team reunion would not necessarily mean abandoning Cass as an individual performer. It could instead provide a platform for him to regain footing in WWE while giving NXT another recognizable pairing. The key issue would be whether the company sees enough value in bringing Enzo back and whether the audience would respond to the partnership in the same way after so many years apart.

There is also an important question about the purpose of an Enzo return if Cass remains a singles heel who is simply attacking opponents on his own. Bringing Enzo into the brand without connecting him to Cass would require a separate creative plan and a separate reason for fans to care. Their past association is so central to both men’s WWE identities that avoiding it entirely could be difficult, even if it was initially seen as the best way to protect Cass’ singles prospects.

Why the Dragon Lee loss drew attention

Dragon Lee’s victory over Cass was especially notable because it came at a sensitive stage of the returning wrestler’s run. Cass had not yet accumulated enough decisive wins or defining moments to establish a durable hierarchy around him. Losing to Lee, a highly talented and dynamic competitor with a very different in-ring style, could lead to several possible interpretations.

One possibility is that WWE is simply using Cass in a role designed to strengthen other talent. Another is that the loss is part of a longer story that has not fully revealed itself. Cass could respond to the setback by becoming more aggressive, changing his approach or moving into a new feud. It is also possible that the company’s original plans have been adjusted after evaluating the early reaction to his return.

Nothing about one match result alone confirms any of those outcomes. Still, the timing has invited scrutiny because Cass returned with enough name recognition to create expectations. His absence from WWE lasted eight years, a substantial gap in an industry that changes rapidly. NXT itself is a different environment from the one Cass left, with a roster full of younger wrestlers, established television personalities and performers competing for limited space in major stories.

For Cass, the challenge is not only winning matches. It is finding a role that feels necessary. An imposing big man can be valuable in NXT, but the character has to offer something beyond physical size. The Evans program appeared designed to introduce that threat, yet the subsequent loss to Lee has made the next phase of the character more important.

The lasting value of the former partnership

Enzo and Cass were an act built on presentation as much as competition. Their promotional style, crowd interaction and contrasting personalities made them memorable before the bell rang. Cass supplied the power and physical intimidation, while Enzo delivered the verbal energy. That combination made them particularly effective as a unit, even when the tag team division was not always positioned as a centerpiece.

Time away can change how a reunion is received, but nostalgia remains a useful tool in wrestling when it is paired with a purpose. Simply recreating an old act without a fresh direction can quickly feel temporary. A successful reunion would need to answer why Enzo and Cass are back together now and what they are trying to accomplish in the current NXT landscape.

That could mean chasing tag team success, targeting a specific set of opponents or using the reunion as the starting point for an eventual split. It could also be used to reframe Cass’ current struggles: after failing to immediately take over as a singles force, he might decide that returning to the partnership that first elevated him is the best way to regain control.

For now, none of that has been confirmed. The relevant point is that a reported Enzo plan existed before Cass returned, and the reported strategy was not to put the two men together right away. The uncertainty around Cass’ current direction naturally makes that initial decision worth revisiting.

What to watch next in NXT

The next few weeks should provide a clearer indication of where Cass stands. A strong follow-up after the Dragon Lee defeat would suggest the loss was a chapter in a broader plan. If Cass continues to drift without a defined objective, speculation about a revised direction will only grow.

Enzo’s reported NXT involvement is equally worth monitoring, though there has been no confirmed on-screen return. If he does appear, the immediate question will be whether WWE follows the reported original concept of keeping him separate from Cass or embraces the obvious history between them.

WWE has a potentially useful decision to make. Cass can still be developed as a singles player, particularly if the company gives him a more focused character and a meaningful rival. But if that route is not gaining traction, reuniting him with Enzo could be a practical way to restore a recognizable act and give both performers a clearer place on NXT television. Cass’ loss to Dragon Lee has not answered that question. It has simply made the answer more important.
