Grayson Waller will have to keep looking for an opponent for his NXT Championship open challenge. CM Punk and AJ Styles have both ruled themselves out of contention ahead of tonight’s episode of WWE NXT, leaving the identity of Waller’s replacement challenger unresolved.

Waller had been set to defend the NXT Championship against Mason Rook, but Rook is now expected to be out of action for the foreseeable future. The injury has forced a change to the planned title picture, with Waller awaiting a new opponent. Details regarding Rook’s condition have not been disclosed.

A newly released video featuring Shawn Michaels addressed the growing question surrounding the open challenge. Styles approached Michaels to ask whether there was anything he could do to help. Michaels responded by offering Styles the chance to challenge Waller for the NXT Championship. Styles immediately declined the opportunity.

The WWE Hall of Famer cited both his retirement and his eyesight in explaining why he would not be the man to face Waller. Styles has been retired from in-ring competition since January, though he has remained involved with WWE in a non-wrestling capacity.

After declining the match, Styles pointed toward Punk, who was nearby wearing a headset. Punk also turned down the possible championship opportunity, though his reasoning centered on the stipulation attached to Waller’s next challenger.

“The Second City Saint” noted that he is not officially part of the NXT roster. That distinction is important because NXT General Manager Robert Stone had previously established that Waller’s next opponent must be an official member of the brand’s roster. Punk’s refusal therefore keeps the search focused on eligible NXT talent rather than a surprise challenger from WWE SmackDown or elsewhere.

Rook’s Injury Changes the Championship Plans

The open challenge was created after the sudden loss of Rook from the scheduled NXT Championship match. Rook had built momentum quickly following his NXT debut earlier this year and had earned the title opportunity through a series of victories.

First, Rook was part of a winning six-man tag team match. He then followed that result by winning a triple threat match, putting himself in line to challenge Waller for the NXT Championship. The sequence positioned Rook as a rising name on the brand and gave Waller a clearly defined opponent for the title defense.

That direction has now been interrupted. WWE has confirmed that Rook will be out for the foreseeable future, but no further information has been provided about the nature of the injury or a possible timetable for his return. Until more is known, the focus shifts away from Rook’s recovery and toward who will receive the opportunity he was scheduled to have.

For Waller, the situation creates both uncertainty and opportunity. An open challenge can produce an unpredictable opponent, but it also deprives a champion of the chance to prepare for one specifically identified challenger. Waller does not yet know who may emerge, what recent momentum that wrestler will carry, or what style of match could await him on NXT.

At the same time, the champion now has a chance to make a statement under unusual circumstances. A successful defense against a replacement challenger would allow Waller to move past the disruption caused by Rook’s absence. A loss, however, would make the open challenge one of the most consequential unexpected changes in the NXT title scene.

Why Styles Will Not Return to the Ring

Michaels’ offer to Styles was notable because Styles remains a recognizable and experienced presence around WWE, even after stepping away from active competition. His response made it clear that a one-night return for an NXT Championship match is not presently in the cards.

Styles specifically referenced retirement and poor eyesight when declining the bout. Rather than presenting himself as a possible late addition to the title match, he redirected attention to Punk. That interaction ensures that neither of the two established WWE figures seen in the video will be Waller’s challenger tonight.

Although Styles is no longer competing, his WWE role has continued behind the scenes. He has worked in scouting and has also filled in as a coach at the WWE Performance Center. The Performance Center serves as a central training environment for talent from WWE’s developmental brands, making Styles’ experience valuable to wrestlers working to establish themselves within NXT.

His presence in the video with Michaels reflects that ongoing connection to the developmental system, but it should not be read as a sign that Styles is preparing for a return to active competition. His own comments shut down that possibility in direct terms.

Punk Cites NXT Roster Requirement

Punk’s answer was different from Styles’ but equally definitive. He did not point to a physical limitation or a lack of interest in a title match. Instead, he highlighted the roster eligibility issue that Stone had already laid out for Waller’s open challenge.

Punk remains a regular fixture on WWE SmackDown and is not an official member of the NXT roster. Under the stated requirement, that makes him ineligible to be Waller’s challenger. His decision keeps the framework of the open challenge intact and reinforces that the replacement opponent is expected to come from within NXT.

That does not mean Punk is disconnected from the brand. Since returning to WWE in 2023, he has become a mentor to members of the NXT roster. His involvement has placed him around developing talent, even as his primary on-screen home remains SmackDown.

The video therefore offered an interesting snapshot of WWE’s current structure. Styles and Punk are both connected to NXT in meaningful ways: Styles through his backstage and coaching work, and Punk through his mentorship. Yet neither is positioned to take Rook’s place in the championship match. Their proximity to the brand does not override Styles’ retirement or the eligibility rule cited by Punk.

The Search for Waller’s Challenger Continues

With Styles and Punk eliminated, the central question for WWE NXT remains unanswered. Which official NXT roster member will step forward to challenge Grayson Waller?

Stone’s previously stated requirement narrows the possibilities, while Rook’s absence makes the decision more urgent. The replacement challenger will not simply be filling an empty slot on the card. Whoever receives the match will be competing for the NXT Championship, potentially changing the direction of the brand’s top title picture in a single night.

The challenger will also enter a situation shaped by unusual timing. Rook earned his opportunity through recent results, but the wrestler who answers Waller’s open challenge may not have had the same buildup. That can create a major opening for a competitor seeking a breakthrough moment, especially when the champion has little time to anticipate the matchup.

Waller, meanwhile, will need to be ready for any eligible name NXT presents. The champion’s immediate concern is no longer a match with Rook, whose path to the title was clearly established. Instead, Waller must prepare for an opponent whose identity remains unknown heading into the show.

Tonight’s episode now carries added importance for the NXT Championship division. Rook’s injury has removed one contender from the board, while the video involving Michaels, Styles, and Punk has ruled out two high-profile possibilities. The field is smaller, the rules are clearer, and Waller is still waiting.

One thing has been confirmed: neither AJ Styles nor CM Punk will answer the call. The next move belongs to an official member of the NXT roster willing to challenge Grayson Waller for the brand’s top prize.
