Brian Johnson’s pursuit of a place in TNA Wrestling took an unexpected turn on the October 29 edition of Thursday Night iMPACT.
In a backstage segment, Johnson approached TNA authority figure Daria Rae while she was on the phone. Rae immediately raised the subject of Johnson having tried to obtain a job with the company for the past year. Johnson responded that he now has one, explaining that TNA’s Board of Directors had appointed him to keep watch over Rae.
The stated reason for the assignment was Rae’s recent conduct involving Indi Hartwell. Johnson told Rae that, after she put her hands on Hartwell and was subsequently suspended for doing so, he had been tasked with reporting any repeat incident to the Board. Rae reacted by saying she would contact the Board herself before walking away from the conversation.
The scene did not establish how much authority Johnson will hold beyond his stated reporting role, nor did it confirm whether he is set to wrestle on the main TNA programming roster. It did, however, put Johnson directly into an ongoing on-screen power struggle surrounding Rae and her position within the company.

A New Position for “The Mecca”
Johnson’s wording was notable because it framed his appearance as more than a one-time backstage interruption. Rather than simply confronting Rae over her suspension or campaigning for an opportunity, Johnson said he had been formally assigned a responsibility by the Board of Directors. That gives the situation a defined purpose: Rae’s actions are now under additional scrutiny, and Johnson is positioned as the person expected to document any further misconduct.
Rae’s response also left the issue unresolved. Her decision to say that she would call the Board herself suggested that she is not prepared to quietly accept Johnson’s involvement. Whether Rae disputes the Board’s decision, attempts to clarify Johnson’s authority, or tries to undermine his new assignment remains to be seen. For now, Johnson’s presence creates another obstacle for Rae as she deals with the fallout from her suspension.
The mention of Indi Hartwell is central to the angle. Johnson specifically cited Rae putting her hands on Hartwell as the conduct that led to the disciplinary action. The Board’s alleged decision to install an observer indicates that Rae has been placed on notice. If another confrontation involving Hartwell, or any other member of the roster, crosses the line, Johnson has said that he is expected to report it.
“The Mecca” said that the Board of Directors had appointed him to keep an eye on Daria Rae and report back if she put her hands on someone again.
That setup gives TNA several possible directions without confirming any one outcome. Johnson could remain primarily an authority-adjacent figure, he could become a recurring antagonist for Rae, or the story could eventually lead to a more direct wrestling-related role. What is established is that his first major on-screen responsibility is tied specifically to Rae’s behavior.
Johnson’s History in Ring of Honor and TNA
Johnson arrives in this role with extensive experience in professional wrestling. He has been wrestling for 19 years, bringing a long career’s worth of experience into a storyline built around supervision, discipline, and company politics. His history includes a run in Ring of Honor before the promotion came under Tony Khan’s ownership.
Johnson wrestled for Ring of Honor from 2017 through 2021. That period placed him in an environment where he was able to build name recognition as “The Mecca,” a persona that has remained associated with him. His latest TNA appearance also makes use of that established identity, as Rae referred to his prolonged attempt to secure work with the promotion and Johnson answered by declaring that he had finally landed a job.
While Johnson has now been presented in a non-wrestling capacity on iMPACT, he is not entirely unfamiliar to the TNA audience. Since 2025, he has competed in five TNA Xplosion matches. Those appearances provided a prior connection to the company, even if this October 29 segment represents a more prominent narrative development for him.
The distinction matters because Johnson was not introduced as a complete unknown stepping into a corporate storyline. He has already wrestled under the TNA umbrella through Xplosion, and his backstage involvement now places him in a different part of the promotion’s presentation. The angle acknowledges his desire to work for TNA while turning that pursuit into the basis for a new television role.
Daria Rae Faces More Pressure
For Rae, Johnson’s arrival adds another complication to a situation already shaped by her suspension. Authority figures often control the direction of a wrestling show, but this segment places Rae in the unusual position of being monitored by someone who says he answers directly to the Board. Even if Johnson does not possess the power to make decisions himself, the ability to report conduct to the Board gives him an important role in determining how Rae’s actions may be judged.
Rae’s brief interaction with Johnson conveyed frustration rather than cooperation. She did not appear willing to discuss the boundaries of his assignment or concede that he should be watching her. Instead, she said she would reach out to the Board herself. The exchange was short, but it established a clear conflict of interests between the two figures.
It also leaves questions around Rae’s relationship with the Board. The segment confirmed Johnson’s claim that the Board appointed him, but Rae’s reaction showed that the matter is likely not settled from her perspective. The Board’s involvement could become a larger element of TNA television if Rae challenges the decision or if Johnson is called upon to provide a report after another incident.
Hartwell remains the person most directly connected to the disciplinary backdrop. Since Rae’s prior physical contact with Hartwell was cited as the reason for the suspension, any future interaction between them will carry added significance. Johnson’s stated mandate means that Rae will be watched particularly closely if she is again placed in a volatile situation.
What the Segment Established
The October 29 scene delivered several concrete developments. First, Johnson is now part of TNA’s on-screen landscape in a Board-appointed capacity. Second, his assignment is to monitor Rae following the suspension connected to Hartwell. Third, Rae is aware of Johnson’s role and has already signaled her displeasure with it.
Just as importantly, the segment did not confirm several details. There was no announcement of a match for Johnson, no explanation of the full scope of his authority, and no indication of when the Board might next address Rae’s status. TNA has therefore left room for the story to develop over future editions of Thursday Night iMPACT.
Johnson’s statement that he now has a job after trying to get one for a year gives the development a straightforward personal hook. He is not merely there as a neutral representative with no stake in the company. His arrival follows a long effort to become part of TNA, and he has now received a position that puts him in direct contact with one of its most controversial authority figures.
Whether that role proves temporary or becomes a lasting part of Johnson’s TNA presence will be determined by what happens next between him, Rae, and Hartwell. At present, “The Mecca” has a clear assignment, Rae has a new person looking over her shoulder, and TNA has added a fresh layer to its authority storyline.
