Becky Lynch’s return to WWE NXT in 2023 was one of the more unusual developments of that period for the brand. By then, Lynch had long since moved beyond the developmental-system label. She was a WrestleMania main-eventer, a former Raw Women’s Champion and SmackDown Women’s Champion, and one of WWE’s most recognizable performers. Yet she went back to NXT, entered programs with rising names including Tiffany Stratton and Lyra Valkyria, and ultimately captured the one championship that had eluded her during her original time on the brand.
Looking back on the run during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Lynch made it clear that the experience was enjoyable precisely because of that contrast. She had already reached the highest levels available to a WWE performer, but the chance to return to NXT and claim the women’s title provided a different kind of satisfaction.
“I never won it when I was in NXT, then I went back and I got it — oh, it was great! It was great, ’cause I really wanted to, in the spirit of Bayley, hold those NXT kids down!”
Lynch then compared the situation to an established athlete returning to a previous stage of their career and trying to win there as well.

“It was like winning the Super Bowl and then like coming back to college and being like: ‘You know what? I’m going to win this tournament too!’”
The comparison captures the dynamic of Lynch’s NXT stint. Her presence immediately gave the brand added star power, but it also placed her in a setting where the defining objective was not simply to add another accolade to her résumé. NXT has regularly served as a showcase for WWE’s emerging talent, and Lynch’s 2023 program put several of those performers in a major spotlight alongside a proven main-roster attraction.
A title Lynch did not win during her first NXT tenure
Lynch’s original journey through NXT came before she became “The Man” and before the character-defining main-roster run that made her a centerpiece of WWE programming. For Lynch, the victory delivered the first NXT Women’s Championship reign of her career. Returning to NXT after reaching those heights could have been treated as a step backward only if viewed strictly through a hierarchy of brands. Lynch’s own description rejects that framing.
Instead, she saw the return as an opportunity to revisit an environment connected to her earlier development while approaching it with the confidence and perspective of someone who had already succeeded at the highest level. Her college-and-Super-Bowl analogy was deliberately exaggerated, but it neatly explained why the title meant something different in 2023 than it would have earlier in her career.
There was also an element of unfinished business. Lynch did not leave NXT as a former NXT Women’s Champion during her first stay. Her return gave her the opportunity to accomplish that, while doing so in a way that kept the division’s younger wrestlers at the center of the story.
A return with a broader purpose
Lynch has stated in the past that she did not initially go back to NXT intending to win the NXT Women’s Championship as a career-completion exercise. The opportunity to hold the title was offered, but her primary interest was working with the developing talent on the brand. That perspective gives the run a clear legacy.
Stratton gained a major rivalry opposite Lynch, while Valkyria defeated Lynch to claim the championship. Both programs placed NXT’s younger names opposite an opponent whose credibility did not need to be manufactured. Lynch’s reputation, accomplishments and connection with WWE audiences were already firmly established. That made the matches consequential and made any victory or strong performance against her feel meaningful.
After dropping the championship to Valkyria, Lynch returned to the main roster, where she has continued her WWE career. Her time in NXT remains a concise but important chapter: it gave her a championship she had never won, allowed her to reconnect with the brand where much of her WWE foundation was built, and created valuable opportunities for the wrestlers who were positioned as NXT’s future.
For Lynch, it was not a return to square one. It was a return with a different purpose, a different level of experience, and a chance to show that even a performer with a career as accomplished as hers could find new meaning in a title she had once missed.
