Trick Williams has built much of his WWE presence around confidence, charisma and the unmistakable energy behind the “Whoop That Trick” movement. But when he looks back on the defining moment of his first WrestleMania, the image that stays with him is not the celebration, the championship or the size of the crowd. It is seeing his mother crying from the front row.
Williams defeated Sami Zayn to capture the WWE United States Championship for the first time at WrestleMania 42, a victory that represented a major milestone in his career. In discussing the night, Williams said the enormity of the accomplishment did not fully register through the spectacle of the match itself. Instead, the bell rang, the moment became real, and his attention immediately went to his parents in the audience.
“Unreal,” Williams said of the experience. “Just being able to see them in the crowd. That’s literally one of the first things I remember after them ringing the bell. My mom crying on the front row.”
It was a revealing recollection from a performer whose on-screen identity is built around being brash, forceful and willing to talk his way into any confrontation. Williams acknowledged that contrast himself. He described the difficulty of trying to maintain the persona of a “big, bad, mean, tough guy” after spotting his mother’s emotional reaction at ringside. Williams said that if he had known as a youngster that he would one day compete at WrestleMania, win a championship in his first appearance on that stage and hear 55,000 fans chanting for him, he likely would have cried tears of joy. Having his family present turned that thought into something more immediate and personal.
“I see my mama crying on the front row, and you know I felt like a little kid again,” Williams said. “Just being there in real life at that moment, my family there ... was just an unreal moment.”
The WrestleMania 42 result positioned Williams among the leading names in the United States Championship picture. Beating Zayn for the title gave him his first reign with one of WWE’s most established championships, and it also added a new level of significance to the rise that has made Williams one of the company’s most prominent personalities.

“That’s my best friend. It’s my support system,” Williams said. “You can see, from my career standpoint, just the trajectory of Trick Williams just go up, up and up and up, the more that me and her actually began to connect and get closer and get to learn each other. So, I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all.”
Williams shared an early piece of advice Legend gave him when they decided to pursue their relationship: she told him he needed to put on 30 pounds. His initial response was playful resistance, asking how she could tell him what he needed to do when he would not presume to tell her what to do. Yet Williams said she was right.
That advice was not presented as a superficial observation. Williams framed the additional size as something that could help determine whether he was simply one of many talents on the roster or someone who could eventually look like a heavyweight champion. It speaks to the larger evolution that Williams sees in himself: not just a performer gaining momentum, but an athlete continuing to develop into the version of himself that can carry the biggest opportunities available in WWE.
“That 30 lbs might be the difference between me being the guy on the roster and me looking like the heavyweight champion one day,” Williams said. “You get to see me growing into the person I was supposed to be.”
Williams credited Legend for her role in that process and emphasized that the support runs both ways. He said he works to push Legend toward being at the top of her game while providing mental and emotional support. His comments portrayed their relationship as a partnership focused on mutual growth, with both performers aiming to succeed at the highest level.
That perspective adds another dimension to Williams’ WrestleMania reflection. The United States Championship victory was an individual result, but Williams did not describe it as an individual journey. His parents were there to witness it. Legend has been a key support system through his ascent. And the people around him, including Lil Yachty, have shared in the experiences surrounding his growing profile.
Lil Yachty’s five-minute challenge
Williams also discussed working with Lil Yachty, describing the artist as someone who loved professional wrestling before their business relationship developed. The two were already friends, which Williams said made the collaboration natural, but he has enjoyed learning more about Lil Yachty on both a personal and professional level.
Williams praised Lil Yachty’s willingness to train and adapt. He said it has been exciting to watch the artist work to break old habits and establish new ones that could be beneficial beyond wrestling. Those comments came as Lil Yachty prepared for an unusual challenge: surviving five minutes in the ring with Baron Corbin.
“He said he wanted a match, and here we are this Sunday,” Williams said before WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event. “Lil Yachty is having his first match, and he better survive for five minutes because if he doesn’t survive for five minutes, then Trick Williams does his title opportunity.”
The stipulation put Williams’ championship ambitions directly in Lil Yachty’s hands. Baron Corbin was the obstacle, and Lil Yachty’s objective was straightforward: make it through the five-minute window. Williams said Lil Yachty had been training and had promised to show him a video of the work he had been putting in while Williams was on a media tour.
At WWE Sunday Night’s Main Event, Lil Yachty did indeed survive the five minutes with Corbin. That outcome secured Williams’ title opportunity, and Williams then defeated Corbin to regain the WWE United States Championship.
The result makes Williams a two-time United States Champion after his WrestleMania 42 victory over Zayn and his subsequent win against Corbin. It also gave the Lil Yachty story a direct payoff. The artist was not merely a celebrity presence at ringside or a friend lending his name to a WWE segment; his five-minute survival had a tangible effect on the title picture and cleared the path for Williams to reclaim the championship.
