Sami Zayn’s turn against Roman Reigns at WWE Royal Rumble 2023 remains one of the most celebrated moments of the modern WWE era, and Zayn believes the San Antonio crowd created a sound unlike any other he has experienced in professional wrestling.
Speaking on Insight, Zayn revisited the climactic Bloodline segment from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. After Reigns defeated Kevin Owens, the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion and the rest of The Bloodline continued their assault on Owens. Zayn, who had spent months trying to earn acceptance within Reigns’ family faction, was pushed into a final decision. Rather than strike Owens, Zayn hit Reigns with a chair and brought his deeply personal involvement in The Bloodline story to a dramatic end.
The response inside the building was immediate and overwhelming. While WWE crowds have delivered plenty of historic ovations over the years, Zayn said the distinct tone of this one is what has stayed with him—particularly after hearing the moment again.
“I haven't heard a reaction quite like that because the very funny thing about that reaction is, like, if you listen to it back, because I actually saw it pretty recently, it's the pitch that [it] gets [to]. It's like a different noise that I've never really heard,” Zayn said.

Zayn made clear that he has a deep appreciation for the biggest reactions in wrestling history. He pointed to Steve Austin’s music hitting and the famous moment involving Austin and Mick Foley as examples of the kind of crowd eruptions that can give viewers goosebumps. Yet, in his view, the sound that followed the chair shot on Reigns had its own unusual quality.
“And, of course, there've been, like, some of the most amazing goosebump-inducing pops in our industry. You know, like when Austin's music hits and that match with Mick Foley finally, that's one of my favorites,” Zayn said. “From a pitch and a tone perspective, when I hit Roman with that chair, it's this pitch that I've never really heard before. It's like they're all saying ‘yeah’ at the same time. It's like the pop doesn't start with an ‘H.’ It starts with a ‘Y.’”
A payoff built through The Bloodline story
The Royal Rumble segment worked because of the long road that led there. Zayn had become an integral figure in The Bloodline storyline, first attempting to align himself with the dominant faction and then gradually becoming far more than an outsider looking for approval. His relationship with Reigns was central to that progression, with the group’s internal dynamics shifting as Zayn earned trust from some members while continuing to face doubt and manipulation.
By the time Royal Rumble arrived in January 2023, the issue was no longer whether Zayn could be useful to The Bloodline. The question was whether he could continue accepting the demands placed on him by Reigns. The post-match attack on Owens forced the answer. Zayn’s chair shot did not simply create a surprise betrayal; it represented the collapse of an alliance that had been built, tested, and emotionally reshaped over an extended period.
That context gave the audience a clear emotional investment in the decision. Owens had long been intertwined with Zayn’s WWE career, and Reigns’ insistence that Zayn take part in the attack put the story’s central conflict directly in front of the audience. When Zayn refused to hit Owens and instead struck Reigns, the crowd had a release point after months of anticipation.
The Alamodome reaction became inseparable from the segment itself. A major wrestling angle can be remembered for an image, a line, an entrance, or a championship change. In this case, the sound of the crowd is just as important as the visual of Zayn standing over Reigns with the chair. That reaction reinforced the scale of the break and immediately established Zayn as a leading fan favorite in the aftermath.
Focused on execution in the moment
Zayn said he understood that something special was happening because of the audience response, even as he remained concentrated on carrying out the segment. That balance is familiar to performers working high-stakes live television: the reaction may be enormous, but the match or angle still has beats to complete, timing to maintain, and other performers to work with.
In Zayn’s case, the moment has gained additional impact through replay. He explained that the audience seemed even louder when he watched the footage back than it did while he was in the arena. That does not diminish what he felt live. Instead, it speaks to how fully a performer can be occupied during a major segment, particularly one carrying the weight of a long-running story.
Inside the Alamodome, Zayn had to stay connected to the action and the people involved in it. Looking back through the broadcast presentation, he was able to hear the reaction as viewers heard it: a collective roar with the unusual pitch he described. The replay offered a different perspective on a moment he already knew had landed in the building.
His description also captures why wrestling reactions cannot always be measured solely by volume. Loudness matters, but the character of a response can matter just as much. A crowd can react with shock, anger, anticipation, relief, admiration, or joy. Zayn’s recollection of a unified “yeah” sound reflects the release and affirmation that followed his decision to stand up to Reigns.
Zayn calls the segment one of his best experiences
For Zayn, the Royal Rumble 2023 scene ranks among the finest things he has ever been involved in. Importantly, he did not frame that assessment only around his own performance or only around the larger Bloodline angle. He emphasized that the segment came together through contributions from many people, with smaller ideas combining into the final result.
“It's one of the best things I've ever been a part of, for sure. That's not just the Bloodline stuff,” Zayn said. “What I loved about it is it was genuinely such a collaborative effort. There were so many people that contributed, like, one idea, one idea, one idea, one idea. And each one of those one ideas all made this perfect pie.”
That collaborative element is significant in understanding why the segment felt complete. Major WWE angles often depend on an array of details: the story established before the event, the positioning of each character, the decisions made in the ring, the pacing of the confrontation, and the audience’s understanding of what is at stake. Zayn’s comments suggest that the Royal Rumble payoff was strengthened by many individual contributions rather than being the product of one isolated idea.
He further described the segment as a moment that perfectly captured The Bloodline story. That is a high standard for a saga that generated numerous major scenes, but Royal Rumble 2023 distilled its core themes into a single sequence. Reigns’ authority was challenged. Zayn’s loyalty reached its limit. Owens remained at the center of the conflict. And the crowd was ready to see Zayn choose a different path.
An enduring WWE crowd moment
Years later, the reaction remains a benchmark for emotionally driven WWE storytelling. The scene did not rely on a sudden return or a surprise debut to generate its impact. The audience reaction came from following characters and relationships closely enough to understand why one chair shot carried so much meaning.
Zayn’s recollection offers a performer’s perspective on why the moment continues to resonate. He remembers recognizing its significance in real time, then discovering through replay that the sound had been even more striking than he initially realized. He remembers the specific pitch of the crowd, not merely its size. And he remembers a segment assembled through collective creative effort.
The result was a Royal Rumble moment that remains firmly associated with Zayn, Reigns, Owens, and The Bloodline’s larger history. For Zayn, it was not just a successful angle or a loud reaction. It was one of the best experiences of his career—and one marked by a roar he says he has never heard quite the same way before.
