Sami Zayn is once again the Undisputed WWE Champion after surviving CM Punk in a volatile SmackDown championship match that broke down amid interference from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae and Kevin Owens.
What began as a high-stakes one-on-one fight between two of WWE’s most resilient competitors became increasingly chaotic as the match wore on. Both men entered with physical targets available to exploit: Zayn’s injured wrist remained a major issue, while Punk appeared to damage his knee early in the contest. Those injuries shaped nearly every major exchange, with each wrestler showing a willingness to attack the other’s weakness in pursuit of the title.
In the end, the turning point came through a frantic sequence involving the championship belt itself. Owens emerged and inadvertently struck Punk with the title before Zayn neutralized Owens with a low blow. That opening gave Zayn the chance to connect with the Helluva Kick on Punk and secure the victory that restored him as Undisputed WWE Champion.
A fast start turns into a battle of attrition
Punk came out aggressively and drove Zayn into the corner during the opening moments. Zayn escaped to the floor, but Punk followed with a dive that kept the pressure on. It was during that early burst of action that Punk tweaked his knee, an issue that quickly became impossible to ignore.

The referee checked on Punk as he continued to favor the leg. Punk declined assistance and chose to continue, but Zayn immediately recognized the opportunity in front of him. The champion did not simply allow Zayn to dictate the terms, however. Punk went after Zayn’s already injured wrist, making it clear that neither competitor was prepared to win with a clean slate physically. The wrist became a recurring obstacle for Zayn whenever he attempted to lift Punk or establish control in grappling exchanges.
The match developed into a calculated contest as much as a fight. Zayn attacked the knee to slow Punk’s explosive offense, while Punk targeted the wrist to compromise Zayn’s ability to execute his most powerful throws and maintain holds. Each man had a clear strategy, and each man was forced to endure the consequences of the other’s plan.
Submission exchanges put both men in danger
Punk appeared to be closing in on a decisive moment when he got Zayn into position for the GTS. Zayn countered, though, transitioning into a figure-four leglock that directly attacked the injured knee. Punk fought his way to the ropes, forcing the break, but the damage added to the sense that his leg could fail him at any time.
Zayn later attempted the Blue Thunder Bomb, only for his injured wrist to prevent him from initially lifting Punk. That hesitation gave Punk room to regroup and pursue another GTS attempt. Zayn avoided it, then managed to hit the maneuver himself, continuing a stretch in which both wrestlers were repeatedly inches away from ending the match.
After an exploder in the corner, Zayn looked ready to put the contest away with the Helluva Kick. Punk answered before Zayn could charge in, catching him with a clothesline. Punk then connected with the GTS, delivering the move that so often signals the end of a match.
But Punk’s knee betrayed him at the worst possible moment.
The champion was unable to make the cover immediately after hitting the GTS. The delay gave Zayn valuable seconds to recover and prevented Punk from capitalizing on what could have been the championship-clinching sequence. It was the clearest example of how much the early knee injury had changed the outcome of the match.
With Punk unable to move quickly enough, the fight continued. Gargano and LeRae then made their presence felt at ringside, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult battle.
Gargano and LeRae create a crucial distraction
Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae ran to ringside and distracted Punk during the late stages of the title match. The disruption nearly helped Zayn score a quick roll-up, creating a sudden momentum swing after Punk had been unable to capitalize on the GTS.
Zayn returned to the figure-four leglock, once more attempting to force Punk to submit through the compromised knee. Punk found another answer, grabbing Zayn’s injured wrist and transitioning into the Anaconda Vice. The hold put Zayn in immediate jeopardy.
Zayn was tapping while LeRae continued to occupy the referee’s attention, preventing the official from seeing the submission. The moment was critical: Punk had Zayn trapped, and Zayn’s apparent tap would have ended the match under normal circumstances. Instead, the referee remained distracted and the match carried on.
Gargano then attempted to escalate matters further by looking to strike Punk with the championship belt. Punk intercepted him and delivered a GTS to Gargano, temporarily clearing the ring of one major threat. For a brief moment, Punk appeared to have fought off the outside interference and restored order.
That order did not last.
Kevin Owens changes the finish — and Zayn takes advantage
As the championship belt became part of the action, Zayn moved toward it. Kevin Owens then appeared and reached the title first, inserting himself into the match at its most decisive stage.
Owens accidentally hit Punk with the championship belt. The unintended strike left Punk vulnerable, but Owens then appeared prepared to turn his attention toward Zayn. Before he could do so, Zayn delivered a low blow to Owens.
With Owens removed from the immediate equation and Punk reeling from the title shot, Zayn seized the opening. He connected with the Helluva Kick and finally put Punk down long enough to finish the match.
The result made Zayn Undisputed WWE Champion once again, ending a contest defined by endurance, opportunism and a series of outside complications that neither man could fully control.
What the result means after a turbulent championship match
Zayn’s victory came through a mixture of perseverance and timely aggression. His wrist limited him throughout the match, particularly when he attempted power offense such as the Blue Thunder Bomb. Still, he was able to continually exploit Punk’s knee, return to the figure-four when opportunities emerged and ultimately deliver the Helluva Kick when the match was at its most chaotic.
Punk, meanwhile, had multiple moments where he seemed on the verge of retaining the championship. He landed the GTS, survived Zayn’s attacks on his leg and applied the Anaconda Vice while Zayn was visibly tapping. Yet the knee injury delayed his cover after the GTS, and the referee’s distraction prevented the Anaconda Vice from producing a finish.
Those near-falls and interrupted conclusions will leave plenty to dissect. Punk can point to the damaged knee and the ringside interference as major factors in the result. Zayn can point to the fact that he endured Punk’s GTS, escaped the Anaconda Vice amid the confusion and fought through his wrist injury to earn the final opening.
The involvement of Gargano, LeRae and Owens also ensures that the fallout from this match may not be limited to Zayn and Punk. Gargano’s attempted belt shot, LeRae’s distraction of the referee and Owens’ accidental strike on Punk all directly affected the final stretch. Owens, in particular, arrived with the title in his hands and wound up playing a decisive role before being stopped by Zayn.
For now, though, the clearest outcome is the championship change. In a match where Punk’s knee repeatedly failed him, Zayn’s wrist repeatedly threatened to halt his offense, and outside personalities repeatedly disrupted the official’s ability to control the action, Sami Zayn found the final opening.
