Roman Reigns has made select appearances feel increasingly significant during this stage of his WWE career, and he believes that significance extends beyond his own presence. The WWE World Heavyweight Champion says the wrestlers chosen to face him receive an opportunity to elevate their standing, provided they already possess the qualities needed to connect with the audience.
Reigns returned to non-premium live event television action on the September 14 edition of WWE Raw, where he defended the WWE World Heavyweight Title against Penta. It was Reigns’ first non-PLE match since January 2025, a fact that underlined the unusual nature of the matchup. Reigns defeated Penta to retain the championship, but the champion views bouts like that as more than another successful defense.
In comments to Complex, Reigns addressed the value he believes comes with working opposite him. He described a distinction between simply wrestling him and being positioned as a talent WWE is looking to move forward through an association with him.
“It’s one thing to have a match with me. It’s another to be the guy that we’re working towards to transition from me, or to use my equity to then put a rocket on that guy’s back.”

Reigns then made his point even more directly, saying that an opponent’s value rises by stepping into the ring with him.
“If you’re in the ring with me, your value’s going up. It sounds arrogant, but I don’t mean it that way. I just mean that if you get in the ring with me, you’re gonna get the very best Roman Reigns.”
A rare Raw match carries extra attention
The September 14 Raw match against Penta was notable before the opening bell because Reigns does not regularly compete in standard weekly television matches. When he does wrestle outside a premium live event setting, the match naturally receives a greater level of attention. That attention can be especially important for the wrestler booked opposite him, whether the story is centered on a title challenge, a personal rivalry, or a larger effort to establish a competitor as a major player.
Penta entered the match with Reigns carrying a pre-existing identity and crowd connection of his own. Reigns retained the WWE World Heavyweight Title, but his comments make clear that he sees the spotlight surrounding a match with him as part of the larger value of the assignment. A championship match with Reigns offers an opponent exposure at the highest level of WWE programming, particularly because Reigns’ appearances and matches remain treated as marquee attractions.
That does not mean Reigns believes the association alone can manufacture a top star. He was clear that the wrestler across from him must bring something meaningful into the rivalry and must already be able to draw a response from the audience. In his view, the role of working with him is to sharpen and increase what is already present rather than create it from nothing.
Reigns says opponents must bring “that special something”
Reigns explained that anyone selected to work with him needs to possess “that special something.” The phrase is subjective, but his fuller explanation placed the emphasis on authenticity, audience connection, and the ability to give him material he can build around in the ring and within a larger WWE presentation.
“You put them with someone like me, and I’ll be able to exploit it and then try to magnify and make it even greater. But they got to have that thing going for themselves already.”
The champion’s assessment reflects the responsibility attached to being one of WWE’s central attractions. Reigns is not presenting himself as a performer who can simply hand another wrestler credibility. Instead, he is describing a process in which an opponent’s existing strengths are brought into sharper focus by the scale of the match, the intensity of the interaction, and the audience investment that follows one of his appearances.
That approach also helps explain why a Reigns program can be viewed as a major opportunity. A performer who already has a clear character, a distinct style, or a strong reaction from fans can potentially reach another level when placed in a prominent match with the champion. Reigns’ own position makes the stakes feel larger, while his emphasis on delivering “the very best Roman Reigns” suggests he expects the match itself to meet that elevated standard.
For opponents, the challenge is considerable. Facing Reigns means working under the brightest possible spotlight, where weaknesses can be exposed just as easily as strengths can be amplified. Reigns’ comments indicate that he wants a wrestler capable of holding that spotlight rather than merely benefiting from proximity to it.
LA Knight is next at Money in the Bank
Reigns’ next WWE World Heavyweight Title defense will take place at WWE Money in the Bank, where he is scheduled to face LA Knight. The match gives Knight a chance to test Reigns’ stated belief in real time. Knight has already established a strong presence with WWE audiences, making him the kind of opponent Reigns was discussing when he spoke about talents needing to have something working for themselves before entering a major program.
The title match also places Knight in the most high-profile championship situation possible: a one-on-one challenge against Reigns with the WWE World Heavyweight Title at stake. Reigns’ victory over Penta ensured that he arrives at Money in the Bank still holding the championship, while Knight now stands as the next competitor looking to stop him.
There is an important difference between receiving a major match and leaving it with increased momentum. Reigns’ comments do not guarantee what will happen to an opponent after the bell. They do, however, establish the standard he believes he brings to those encounters. He sees his matches as consequential because he is prepared to perform at his highest level, and because the wrestler opposite him is given a platform that few others can provide.
For Knight, that platform comes at a pivotal moment. A title challenge against Reigns can reinforce the perception that he belongs in WWE’s top tier, particularly if he is able to match the champion in the moments that matter most. Reigns has framed that possibility as dependent on the challenger’s own foundation. Knight will need to demonstrate the crowd connection, confidence, and distinctive quality Reigns says are necessary to capitalize on the opportunity.
The champion’s value is part of the story
Reigns acknowledging his own value may sound forceful, but he explicitly rejected the idea that he was trying to boast. His argument is rooted in the level of attention attached to his matches and in his confidence that he can make an opponent’s defining traits more visible. In wrestling, where placement, presentation, and audience perception are central to a performer’s trajectory, that kind of opportunity can matter as much as the result itself.
His remarks also underline the significance of the WWE World Heavyweight Title picture. Reigns is not merely defending a championship; he is presenting each major opponent as someone who must prove they are equipped to operate at his level. Penta received that chance on Raw and came up short in the title match. LA Knight will be the next wrestler tasked with meeting Reigns in a setting where the champion believes both the risk and the potential reward are substantial.
Whether Knight can defeat Reigns at Money in the Bank remains to be seen. What is already clear is that Reigns considers the match an opportunity for more than a title contender to gain a win. In his view, sharing the ring with him can raise a wrestler’s profile—but only if that wrestler arrives with the ability to make the moment count.
