Mason Rook has identified Gunther as the opponent he would most like to face at WrestleMania, while making clear that the version of the Ring General he finds most intimidating is not necessarily the one WWE fans see today.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Rook was asked about Gunther’s physical transformation since arriving in WWE. Gunther has notably become leaner during his time on the main roster, a change from the bigger frame he carried as WALTER on the independent scene and through the earlier portion of his NXT UK run. Rook praised Gunther’s current form, but said the heavier version made the stronger first impression on him as a wrestler and as a fan of the craft.
“I enjoy this new version of him, but personally, I would say, as someone who loves to be inspired by different wrestlers and look to to take bits from, I would definitely say when he was a bit heavier and bigger, he was a lot more menacing. That is who I would want to be in there with. That’s who I looked at and was like, ‘Wow, this guy is someone who I should try to emulate.’”
Rook’s comments are not a criticism of Gunther’s current presentation. Instead, they underline how much the earlier WALTER persona resonated with him. Before adopting the Gunther name in WWE, the Austrian star built a reputation around an imposing physical presence, an austere demeanor and a punishing in-ring style.
