Jackson Drake remains the WWE NXT North American Champion, but his latest successful title defense came with major assistance from outside the ring. Drake defeated EK Prosper on the October 27 episode of WWE NXT after Kam Hendrix appeared at ringside and shoved Prosper from the top turnbuckle at a pivotal point in the match.

The interference created the opening Drake needed to finish Prosper with a Shining Wizard. It also continued a familiar pattern around the champion and The Vanity Project, as Drake once again benefited from distractions and involvement involving the group during a championship match.

Prosper came close to breaking through despite being surrounded by the numbers game. He survived several of Drake's biggest offensive sequences, fought off NXT Tag Team Champions Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes when they got involved, and had climbed to the ropes for a potential match-ending moonsault before Hendrix changed the direction of the contest.

Drake entered with The Vanity Project at his side

As has become customary for Drake, the NXT North American Champion was not alone for the defense. He made his entrance alongside Vanity Project stablemates Baylor, Smokes, and Myka Lockwood. The group's presence immediately gave Drake an advantage in an encounter against a challenger who needed to remain alert not only to the champion, but to multiple people stationed around the ring.

Lockwood played a central role in the match well before its finish. While the referee was checking on Drake, Lockwood discreetly grabbed Prosper's leg, halting the challenger's momentum at a critical time. Prosper was distracted long enough for Drake to recover and send him into the ropes.

The sequence underlined the difficult task facing Prosper. Drake was able to pick his spots in the ring while his allies repeatedly looked for opportunities to influence the match out of the referee's line of sight. Prosper had to contend with a champion who could capitalize quickly, as well as a ringside contingent determined to protect the titleholder.

Drake then began putting together one of his stronger stretches of offense. The champion connected with a springboard Spanish Fly before following up with a cutter. That combination nearly ended the match, but Prosper kicked out and stayed in the hunt for the North American Championship.

Unable to secure the victory, Drake went to the top rope looking for another decisive blow. From the elevated position, he delivered a headbutt that sent Prosper crashing down to the mat. The impact gave Drake another apparent opportunity to take control completely, yet Prosper showed the resilience that had kept him competitive throughout the bout.

EK Prosper weathered the champion's offense

Prosper did not remain grounded for long. He answered Drake's aerial attack by sending the champion flying with a hurricanrana, changing the pace and finally putting Drake in a position to defend rather than dictate the action.

The challenger followed with a leg lariat and continued building momentum. Baylor and Smokes attempted to intervene, but Prosper fought them off rather than allowing The Vanity Project to shut down his rally. That resistance was an important moment in the match, as Prosper was able to temporarily neutralize Drake's backup and return his full focus to the champion.

With the ringside threats pushed aside, Prosper landed a poisonrana on Drake. The move brought him closer than he had been to capturing the title and left the champion vulnerable. Prosper had survived the springboard Spanish Fly, the cutter, and the top-rope headbutt. He had also overcome the earlier distraction from Lockwood and the attempted involvement from Baylor and Smokes.

At that stage, Prosper appeared ready to deliver the final move. He climbed the turnbuckle and prepared for a moonsault, a high-risk decision that could have ended Drake's reign had it connected. Instead, the closing seconds once again became defined by outside interference.

Kam Hendrix changed the outcome

Lockwood went onto the apron to distract the referee as Prosper stood poised on the top rope. With the official's attention drawn away from the challenger, Kam Hendrix made his presence felt. Hendrix shoved Prosper from the turnbuckle, preventing the moonsault and sending him down into position for Drake.

Drake immediately took advantage of the opening, delivering a Shining Wizard to Prosper for the pinfall victory. The result kept the NXT North American Championship with Drake and added another successful defense to his reign, though the finish left little doubt that Hendrix's involvement was the key factor in the closing sequence.

The appearance also raises a significant question coming out of the match: what was Hendrix's connection to Drake's title defense? Hendrix's action directly benefited the champion, who had already received help from Lockwood and the rest of The Vanity Project during the contest. For Prosper, the loss came after he had seemingly fought through each obstacle presented by the champion's allies, only for another figure to emerge at the final moment.

The finish is especially frustrating for Prosper because he had Drake in a compromised position just before the interference. His poisonrana had shifted the match in his favor, and the moonsault represented a clear chance to complete the comeback. The referee distraction and Hendrix's shove took that chance away before Prosper could attempt the move.

Drake's title reign continues to grow

Drake won the NXT North American Championship at NXT Heatwave on August 30, defeating Myles Borne to begin his reign. Since winning the championship, he has retained against Tavion Heights and now EK Prosper on NXT television.

The victory over Prosper further establishes Drake as a champion who has been able to preserve his reign under pressure. At the same time, the circumstances surrounding this defense place continued attention on the methods being used by Drake and The Vanity Project. Lockwood's distractions, Baylor and Smokes' involvement, and Hendrix's final intervention all played roles in ensuring that Prosper did not leave with the title.

The Vanity Project's influence extends beyond Drake's singles championship. Baylor and Smokes currently hold the NXT Tag Team Championship, meaning the group retains championship control in multiple divisions. Earlier on the same episode of NXT, however, Baylor and Smokes were defeated by Romeo Moreno and Noam Dar in the semifinals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

That tournament setback did not prevent Baylor and Smokes from joining Drake at ringside for his title defense. Their presence, along with Lockwood's involvement, demonstrated that the group remains united around protecting Drake's championship position even after a difficult result earlier in the night.

Prosper's challenge fell short, but his performance stood out

While Drake's hand was raised, Prosper left the match having shown he could push the North American Champion to the brink. He withstood a sustained attack, countered Drake's offense, fought off multiple members of The Vanity Project, and had built enough momentum to attempt a finishing moonsault before Hendrix's intervention.

Prosper was unable to overcome the combined efforts of Drake's allies, but the match made clear that the challenger was not simply overwhelmed by the titleholder. The decisive moment came when Prosper was prevented from executing his intended finishing move, not when Drake had fully put him away on his own.

For Drake, the immediate result is what matters most: the NXT North American Championship remains around his waist. His reign continues after another televised defense, and The Vanity Project still has a champion at the center of its operation. Yet the involvement of Kam Hendrix adds a new element to the situation, particularly after Prosper was denied what looked like his best opportunity to win.

Drake survived EK Prosper, but the manner of that survival will remain central to the fallout. Prosper had the champion reeling and was seconds from launching himself into a potential title-winning moonsault. Hendrix ensured that moment never arrived, and Drake turned the interference into another successful defense.
