John Cena has spent decades accumulating stories from the road, but one of the more memorable ones from his WWE years involves an unplanned stay in Ireland, a volcanic disruption, Hornswoggle, Christian, and a room-service hamburger Cena unknowingly ate after it had been vomited on.
Speaking with Trevor Noah on What Now, Cena recalled the extraordinary travel situation that left WWE talent stranded in Ireland when a volcano prevented the group from returning to the United States for Raw. With the roster unexpectedly stuck overseas and no show to immediately travel toward, Cena said the circumstances led to a very eventful night among friends.
“We got stuck in Ireland because there was a Volcano and we couldn’t get back to the states to perform Raw,” Cena said. “The last thing you want to do is leave us stuck someplace alone idle with nothing to do. Boy, we had a great night.”
The story centers on Dylan Postl, better known to WWE audiences as Hornswoggle, along with Christian Cage, who performed as Christian during his WWE run. Cena described them as friends and explained that Hornswoggle had become sick after drinking and eating room service.

A Room-Service Tray Left in the Hallway
As Cena told it, Christian helped take care of Hornswoggle after the night out. Hornswoggle had ordered food through room service, including a hamburger, but did not finish the evening feeling particularly well.
“A friend of mine, Dylan, who wrestled under the moniker Hornswoggle, and another friend of mine, Christian Cage, who was Christian in the WWE,” Cena said. “Christian took Dylan to bed, Dylan was drunk and he had room service and ended up throwing up on his hamburger.”
Christian then put Hornswoggle to bed and removed the room-service tray from the room, leaving it outside in the hotel hallway. At that point, the burger appeared to be an untouched meal waiting on a tray. Hours later, Cena found it while hungry, heavily intoxicated, and out of options for food.
“That hamburger, Christian put him to bed and tucked him in. He said, ‘Dude, I’m gonna get the tray out’ and put the tray in the hallway,” Cena continued. “Flash forward to hours later, I am heavily influenced. Food is closed and there are no options available. I look and I’m like, ‘That burger is not even touched. I’m just gonna bring that inside.’ I ate the thing.”
At the time, Cena had no indication that the burger had been involved in Hornswoggle’s rough night. The realization did not come until the following morning, when the wrestlers met for breakfast and Cena casually asked about why the others had turned in early.
The Breakfast Conversation That Revealed Everything
Cena’s breakfast discussion with Christian and Hornswoggle quickly turned into a moment of horror and disbelief. The story came together as they explained Hornswoggle had been ill, Christian had gotten him to bed, and the food tray had been placed outside the room.
“Then, I come down to breakfast the next morning and I’m like, ‘Oh man, you guys cool? You dipped out early,’” Cena said. “They’re like, ‘No, no, he had some problems, I took him to bed, he puked on his hamburger and I put it in the hallway.’”
Only then did Cena begin connecting the details. He asked what floor they had been staying on, learned it was the third floor, and understood that the apparently abandoned burger he had found overnight was the same hamburger Christian had taken out of Hornswoggle’s room.
“I was like, ‘What? Wait, what room are you in? You’re on the third floor?’ I ate the puke burger,” Cena said. “I needed it.”
The tale is certainly one of the more extreme examples of the locker-room travel stories that have long circulated around WWE’s demanding touring schedule. It also captures the unusual conditions caused by an unforeseen international travel interruption. A stranded roster, closed food options, late-night partying, and a room-service tray left in a hallway created the kind of chain of events that would be difficult to script convincingly.
Cena, Hornswoggle and Christian Shared a WWE Era
The anecdote also reflects a period when Cena, Hornswoggle and Christian were all regular figures around WWE programming and live events. Cena was one of the company’s defining stars and a central presence on Raw, while Hornswoggle became a popular personality through storylines that mixed comedy, character work and occasional in-ring action. Christian, meanwhile, brought years of experience and a widely respected reputation as a performer to WWE.
Each man had a very different role on television, but life on the road regularly put wrestlers, announcers, producers and staff in the same hotels, airports and buses for long stretches. The travel was a fundamental part of WWE’s work environment, particularly for performers attached to a full-time schedule. Those circumstances often produced close friendships, pranks and stories that only became public years later.
In this instance, Cena made clear that the incident occurred under a uniquely chaotic set of circumstances. The volcanic disruption had kept the group in Ireland rather than allowing them to return to the United States as planned. With the scheduled travel disrupted, the wrestlers were left with unexpected downtime away from the usual rhythm of flights, shows and media obligations.
Cena did not frame the incident as anything other than a ridiculous and regrettable consequence of the moment. His blunt conclusion that he “needed it” underscored how hungry he had been when he found the burger, even if he had no idea what had happened to it earlier in the night.
An Unusually Candid Road Story
Cena has increasingly shared stories from throughout his wrestling and entertainment career in interviews, often balancing recollections of major professional moments with less glamorous memories of life on the road. This one falls firmly into the latter category.
There is no championship angle, business announcement or in-ring controversy attached to the tale. Instead, it is a remarkably candid account of three wrestlers navigating an unexpected delay far from home. The humor comes from Cena’s delayed discovery, Christian’s practical decision to clear the tray from Hornswoggle’s room, and the unfortunate appearance of a burger that seemed perfectly available to a hungry person passing through a hotel hallway.
The story also demonstrates why travel anecdotes remain such a durable part of wrestling culture. The profession requires performers to spend significant time in unfamiliar cities, move quickly between commitments, and adapt when weather, transportation and scheduling problems alter plans. Most of those moments never become public. A few, however, become unforgettable stories among the people who were there.
For Cena, the Ireland delay produced one he will likely never escape. What began as an inconvenience caused by a volcano became a legendary late-night mistake involving Hornswoggle’s discarded room service. By the time Cena learned the full explanation at breakfast, the burger was already gone and the lesson had been learned in the most unpleasant way possible.
Elsewhere, Cena recently discussed his approach to taking on the film Matchbox, revealing in a separate interview that he agreed to participate without first reading a script. Whether discussing his expanding work in Hollywood or recalling bizarre moments from the WWE road, Cena continues to show a willingness to tell stories with unusual honesty.
And among the countless accounts from a career that has included WrestleMania main events, championship reigns and global travel, the “puke burger” may stand as one of the most unforgettable.
