Grayson Waller is not softening his stance now that he sits at the top of WWE NXT. If anything, the NXT Champion believes his reign has reinforced every criticism he has made about the locker room around him.

Waller recently addressed his return to NXT, his increasingly hostile rivalry with Tony D’Angelo, and the way he has been able to provoke opponents for months before facing a physical response. Speaking on Busted Open After Dark following a confrontation with D’Angelo ahead of Halloween Havoc, Waller argued that his willingness to create conflict and carry the spotlight separates him from the rest of the brand.

“I’m outworking everyone here,” Waller said on Busted Open After Dark. “I’m not just saying it, I’m doing it. And then I’m also planning it for everyone.”

That declaration fits the character Waller has presented since returning to NXT several months ago. He has been loud, self-assured, and deliberately antagonistic, consistently framing himself as the performer who understands the business better than the people trying to take his championship. His confidence has also been backed by results to this point, as Waller retained the NXT Title against D’Angelo at Halloween Havoc.

The victory over D’Angelo did not settle Waller’s larger argument, however. In Waller’s view, D’Angelo’s delayed reaction to repeated insults demonstrated exactly why the champion has been comfortable labeling members of the NXT roster as soft.

Waller Questions Why D’Angelo Waited To Strike

In discussing the D’Angelo rivalry, Waller compared the situation to what could have happened on a WWE main roster locker room in an earlier era. He asked Bully Ray to imagine a newcomer arriving from another company, publicly insulting established talent, making comments about a wrestler’s family, and claiming that he deserved everything ahead of the people already there.

Waller’s point was that such behavior would have received an immediate response in a more unforgiving environment. Instead, he said D’Angelo took months before finally throwing a strike during their confrontation.

“He didn’t hit me till tonight. What’s that, four months?” Waller said. “It took him four months and all that before he finally hit me. Like, that’s why I keep calling these guys soft.”

The champion also referenced going to D’Angelo’s home as part of their escalating feud. Waller maintained that D’Angelo’s response did not match the level of disrespect he had been shown, saying that a double-leg takedown was all he received after crossing that line.

For Waller, that sequence is not merely a talking point. It is the foundation of his claim that he can control the pace of NXT’s biggest rivalries. By constantly pushing buttons, he forces challengers to react to him, while also deciding when and where the next confrontation will take place. Whether viewers agree with his assessment or not, Waller has repeatedly made himself impossible to ignore.

D’Angelo did ultimately get his chance at Halloween Havoc, with the NXT Championship on the line. Waller survived that challenge and left still holding the title, an outcome that gives his boasts additional weight even if his methods remain objectionable to much of the roster.

Halloween Havoc Result Keeps Waller On Top

Waller’s successful title defense against D’Angelo was a major moment in the champion’s current run. D’Angelo had become one of the most motivated challengers Waller could have faced, given how personal their issues had become. The conflict extended beyond standard championship ambitions, with Waller repeatedly targeting D’Angelo’s pride and testing how much he was willing to tolerate.

That dynamic made Halloween Havoc an important proving ground for both men. D’Angelo had the opportunity to silence Waller and take the championship, while Waller had the chance to demonstrate that his verbal attacks were not covering for a lack of ability in the ring. The champion’s retention means the latter argument remains intact.

There is a difference, though, between surviving a deeply personal rivalry and being prepared for every possible challenger. Waller’s next defense presents a very different kind of pressure. Rather than facing an NXT regular who has been drawn into Waller’s games over several months, he is set to meet one of the most recognizable and scrutinized names in modern professional wrestling.

CM Punk Represents A Different Level Of Challenge

On tonight’s special Wednesday edition of NXT, Waller will defend the NXT Championship against CM Punk. It is a matchup with significant intrigue, particularly because Waller has been compared to Punk during the past several months.

Those comparisons make the title match more than a routine defense. Waller has built his current identity around a sharp tongue, a sense of self-importance, and a willingness to challenge the culture around him. Punk has long been associated with an outspoken persona and an ability to generate intense reactions, so putting the two men across the ring from one another naturally invites discussion over similarities and differences.

For Waller, this is also the clearest opportunity yet to show that his confidence is not dependent on choosing targets he can manipulate. Punk arrives as a challenger with enormous name recognition and a history of thriving in high-pressure environments. A victory would allow Waller to point to a defining accomplishment of his reign and insist that he has defeated not only NXT’s homegrown competition, but also a performer whose presence changes the scale of any match.

At the same time, the challenge puts Waller’s central claim under a microscope. He says he is outworking everyone in NXT, and he has criticized his peers for allowing him to provoke them without immediate consequences. Punk is not entering this match as someone who has spent months accepting Waller’s insults. That changes the champion’s usual formula.

Waller has been able to gain an advantage in recent programs by creating chaos before the bell rings. He gets inside his rivals’ heads, defines the conversation, and then uses their anger as proof that he was right to challenge them. Against Punk, Waller must deal with an opponent who carries his own reputation for confrontation and verbal warfare. The psychological contest may be just as consequential as the championship match itself.

A Champion Thriving On Attention

Waller’s comments reveal why he has been so effective at keeping the focus on himself since his return. He does not simply want to be recognized as NXT Champion; he wants to be viewed as the person who drives the brand’s biggest stories. His claim that he is “planning it for everyone” suggests he sees himself as more than another wrestler pursuing success. He sees himself as the engine behind the show.

That approach is naturally divisive. It creates enemies, brings challengers forward, and guarantees that every appearance can turn into a confrontation. But it also carries risk. The more Waller insists that no one can match his drive or toughness, the more meaningful it becomes when someone finally does.

D’Angelo was unable to take the championship at Halloween Havoc, leaving Waller free to claim another victory in his campaign against the supposed softness of the NXT roster. Punk now offers a fresh test, one that is less about whether Waller can get under an opponent’s skin and more about whether he can remain champion when facing a challenger equipped to meet him at every level.

Waller enters tonight’s special Wednesday edition of NXT with the title, momentum from Halloween Havoc, and no shortage of belief in himself. CM Punk enters with a chance to end that reign. Whatever happens, Waller’s words have ensured that the spotlight will be firmly on the champion when the bell rings.
