Chad Gable’s path to the Intercontinental Championship has not been a straight line, and that is precisely why he believes his current WWE success carries so much weight.

For years, Gable was widely regarded as one of the company’s most naturally gifted in-ring performers. His amateur wrestling credentials, Olympic background, explosive athleticism and ability to blend technical wrestling with comedy gave him a versatile foundation. Yet versatility can be a complicated trait in WWE. While it can keep a performer useful in many different situations, it does not always guarantee a sustained chance at the very top of the card.

Gable has experienced that reality across multiple stages of his WWE career. He has worked in tag teams, comedy-oriented material and more serious competitive roles. He has also had to navigate characters that did not always appear to match the strengths many fans associated with him. The most prominent example was the Shorty G persona, a period that remains closely connected to discussions about Gable’s more difficult creative stretches.

Now, with Gable holding the Intercontinental Championship, the Olympian has looked back on those valleys and explained why overcoming them has changed the way he views the opportunities in front of him.

Gable Was Determined to Make Every Opening Count

Speaking with Complex Graps, Gable said he was never content to simply wait for a larger role to arrive. He described actively seeking opportunities within WWE, including times when he felt he had to repeatedly press the issue with the people who could help create them.

“I always wanted opportunities. I was never really given them outright. So when I’m asking, when I go to the right people in the past and I’m asking for opportunities, basically to the point almost where I’m begging for opportunities — this is years ago now at this point — so if I’m given one after begging or asking or whatever, I better make damn sure and like do my part to deliver on that. You know, whether or not it’s exactly what I wanted or looked for, that’s out of my hands.”

That approach speaks to a central part of Gable’s career identity. His story has not been built around being handed a clear, uninterrupted push. Instead, he has often been tasked with finding a way to stand out regardless of the role. Whether the assignment leaned heavily on entertainment, tag team wrestling or a more intense singles presentation, Gable’s objective remained the same: perform well enough that WWE would have a reason to keep giving him more.

It is also a mindset that explains why the current chapter means more than merely winning a championship. The Intercontinental Title has long been one of WWE’s defining prizes, with its lineage often associated with performers who establish themselves through standout matches and consistent work. For a wrestler who spent years asking to prove he could do more, becoming champion represents a payoff for persistence as much as it does a career milestone.

The Difficult Periods Are Part of What Makes the Moment Matter

Gable did not dismiss the challenging parts of his WWE tenure. Instead, he framed them as part of the experience that makes his present success feel earned.

“But what kind of makes all this stuff now that’s happening even more special is the fact that we got through some of those, like whatever you want to call them, valleys or low points, and came out the other side here in what I would say is like I’m enjoying the fruits of my labor now and all of that of getting through that stuff. So, it’s really rewarding at this point.”

The wording is notable because Gable’s reflections are not simply about a single unpopular character or one lost opportunity. He is describing the cumulative effect of enduring the uncertain periods that can define a wrestler’s career. In an environment where performers may be asked to shift direction quickly, pursue a character they did not envision for themselves or spend time outside the title picture, staying prepared can be just as important as talent.

Gable’s willingness to work within whatever was offered did not mean every opportunity was exactly what he wanted. He was clear that certain decisions were outside his hands. But he also made clear that he saw a responsibility to deliver once an opening appeared. That distinction is important. A performer cannot control every creative choice, but Gable’s comments suggest he focused on controlling preparation, effort and execution.

That perspective has become increasingly visible in the way his current run is being discussed. Gable’s rise to the Intercontinental Championship is not being presented as the arrival of an unknown talent who suddenly found momentum. It is the reward for someone who has been regarded as capable for a long time, continued to develop through difficult circumstances and eventually reached a position where his work was central to the championship scene.

An Intercontinental Champion With Something to Prove

Gable’s comments also indicate that he does not view winning the Intercontinental Championship as the end of his mission. He has laid out an ambition to make his reign memorable, do something special with the title and keep the audience guessing.

That is a significant goal for any Intercontinental Champion. The championship’s importance is shaped not only by the person who holds it, but by the defenses, rivalries and performances that define a reign. Gable’s background gives him several tools to pursue that objective. He can wrestle a technically driven match, bring an amateur wrestling influence to the ring, work at a fast pace and adjust his presentation depending on the opponent or the stakes.

His ability to connect through personality is equally relevant. Gable has shown different dimensions during his WWE career, and that range could be valuable as champion. A titleholder must be able to make viewers believe a challenger has a chance while still maintaining the credibility of the belt. Gable’s stated desire to surprise the audience suggests he wants his reign to have an identity beyond simply possessing the championship.

There is also a wider lesson in the champion’s account of his career. WWE success can be measured by championships, main events and major moments, but the route to those accomplishments is rarely identical from wrestler to wrestler. Some talents receive immediate momentum; others have to build their case over years through smaller opportunities. Gable sees himself in the latter category, and he is not minimizing the frustration that came with it.

Instead, he is emphasizing the satisfaction of reaching the other side. The setbacks did not disappear from his history, but they changed the meaning of the achievement that followed. Had Gable’s career unfolded without the leaner periods, he may still have valued a championship victory. But having pushed for chances, accepted roles he did not necessarily choose and continued to deliver through the low points, the Intercontinental Title has become a symbol of something more personal.

The Next Test Is Building a Reign Worth Remembering

Gable’s current position gives him the chance to turn that personal accomplishment into a defining body of work. He has already reached a long-sought destination, but the standard he has set for himself is higher than merely retaining the championship. He wants to elevate what the title means during his time with it.

That objective will place a spotlight on every defense and every challenger who steps forward. It will also test the same qualities Gable says carried him through the difficult years: the readiness to seize an opportunity, the discipline to deliver in the role he is given and the determination to keep pushing when circumstances are not ideal.

For Gable, the Intercontinental Championship is evidence that perseverance can eventually reshape a career. The former low points are still part of the story, including the Shorty G chapter and the stretches in which he sought greater opportunities. But he now sees those experiences as the foundation for a far more rewarding moment.

As champion, Gable is not looking to dwell on what did not happen earlier in his career. His attention is on making the most of what is happening now. After years of asking for the chance to show more, he has the title, the platform and a stated intention to make his reign special.
